Lenten Rose. Large, nodding, cup-shaped, flow- ers appear in early spring. Plants often bloom up to 4 months. Glossy green, palm-like foliage remains attractive nearly all year. Large, semi-double, 3 to 5 inch blooms are gold- en-yellow with a slightly darker center, produced in great masses over a long period. Flowers last for weeks and are loved by bees. Strong-stemmed, clump-forming plants have abundant, dark green, serrated foliage. Seldom requires staking. (Pic- tured on page 46). 3P

Helleborus These unusual perennials bloom in midwinter in mild climates and late winter or early spring in areas where the ground freezes hard. All require moist, highly organic, well-draining alkaline soil. They are sometimes slow to establish but are long-lived, preferring not to be disturbed.

Bear’s Foot Hellebore. Clump-forming plants have fanned arrangements of deeply divided green foliage, often tinted with purple.
