Eryngium (Sea Holly) These interesting, clump-forming, tap-rooted plants add a new dimension to the flower border. Cone-shaped or rounded flowers are surrounded by stiff, spiny, petal-like struc- tures called bracts. Leaves are also spiny. They make excellent cutflowers, both fresh and dried. For winter interest and seed-eat- ing birds, leave the flowers on the plant. The finches will thank you! Plants are tolerant to drought and salt, seldom need division and grow in any average soil that’s well-drained.

Deep blue flowers surrounded by very large frilled blue bracts are larger than the spe- cies. Strong stems of the well-branched plants are also blue near the top. BR
