Oenothera (Sundrops, Evening Primrose) These North American native plants are delightful ornamentals for rock gardens and borders. The fol- lowing day-blooming varieties produce large, lightly cupped flowers in terminal clusters. Drought tolerant and easily grown in any well-drained soil.

This heuchera relative from China is a very unique perennial for partial shade. Its large fan-shaped leaves emerge green in spring, topped by delicate starry white flowers that last for several weeks. As summer progresses, the foliage ages to mid-green with bright red creeping inward from the edges. By fall the leaf color is fire red. Use this stunning plant as a groundcover or specimen in any partial- ly shaded area. It likes humus-rich soil with good moisture. 3P

Nepeta (Catmint) Gray-green minty scented foliage clothes wiry stems crowned with clusters of tubular flow- ers. Forms nice clumps and is rarely bothered by pests or disease. Ideal as a filler plant. Eas- ily grown in average, well-drained soil.

O. rotundifolium ‘Kent's Beauty’ #A13343 Kent's Dittany. This oregano is a superb ornamental that is beautiful spilling over the sides of containers, walls or for edging. The bushy, trailing plant bears clusters of hop-like, pendant bracts, their color segu- ing from green through dusty rose to deep mauve- pink, with protruding lavender corollas. The abun- dant flowers nearly hide the heart-shaped, fragrant, silver-veined foliage. Good drainage is critical for this plant. 3P
