Techny or Mission Arborvitae


23044–(Thuja occidentalis ‘Techny’)–Zones 3-8–Maintains its dark green color throughout the winter. Foliage is soft and shears beautifully. Al- though its growth is more open than the pyramidal arborvitae, trimming each year will make it a beautiful specimen. Can be held to 6 feet with light trimming, but will grow to 15 feet or more if left untrimmed. Plant as specimens or space 2 to 4 feet apart for a tall hedge. 8 to 12 inch bareroot transplants. ❍ ◗

23213–(Pinus cembra)–Zones 3-7–Bears abun- dant crops of nutritious pine nuts. This stately pine is native to the arid regions of Korea and east- ern Russia where its fl avorful, nutritious nuts are gathered by the local populations. It has a narrow, dense, columnar habit and 2 to 3 inch long, blue- green needles borne in clusters of 5. A great speci- men plant and a nice uniform hedge. Theves Poplar (Populus nigra ‘Afghani- ca’)–Zones 3-9–Resem- bles the Lombardy pop- lar in shape, but is much hardier, more disease re- sistant and longer lived. Glossy dark green leaves turn yellow in fall. The bark is striking white. Grows 60 feet tall or more. Bareroot trees. ❍

Marjatta Hybrid Rhododendrons from Finland


Zones 4-7–These hardy rhododendrons are the result of years of breeding work. Developed by Dr. Peter Tigerstedt at the University of Helsinki, Finland and further tested by the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, they have proven to exhibit bud hardiness to at least -29°F. Bloom size is impres- sive and dark green foliage is large and evergreen. Potted 6 to 10 inch plants. ◗


20851–POHJOLA’S DAUGHTER–Large fuchsia-pink buds open into shell-pink blooms that slowly mature to white. Has a low, mounding habit. Mature plants grow 3½ feet tall and 5 feet wide.


20813–HAAGA–Flowers are bright pink with orange-red fl ecks. A late bloomer to extend the season. Rounded plants grow 5 feet tall and wide.

20815–HELLIKKI–A late bloomer with violet-red blooms. Buds and new growth have a felted coating that persists on the undersides of the leaves. Grows 5 feet tall and wide.

RHODODENDRON AND AZALEA CULTURE HAAGA – 22 – HELLIKKI


These plants require soil that has a high acid content. A pH of 4.0 to 5.5 is recommended. When planting we suggest spreading ½ lb. of fast acting Aluminum Sulphate (p.23) around each plant, working it thoroughly into the soil. To maintain the proper pH a top dressing of 1 cup Soil Sulphur (p.23) worked into the soil every 3 to 4 years is suffi cient.
