(Lonicera caerulea)–Zones 2-8–(P.P.#11747) Blueberry-like fruit ripens before straw- berries. Also known as honeyberries or blue honeysuckle, Canadian haskap are larger, sweeter and fl eshier than other hon- eyberries. They’re packed with 2½ times the antioxidants found in blueberries and high levels of vitamin C. The non-sucker- ing, 4 to 6 foot fruiting shrubs are hardy to -40°F and their blossoms tolerate tempera- tures as low as 10°F without affecting fruit production. Plant in full sun in the north, but locate in afternoon shade in hotter re- gions. Bearing begins about 3 years after


Zones 4-8–Unique apple trees have no branches! They’re perfect for plant- ing in confi ned areas, in pots, or as conversation pieces in your yard. Apples are produced in clusters along the trunk on short spurs. Growth of the tree is vertical with almost no branching. Sea Berry or Sea Buckthorn


fruits are produced in late summer and fall. The berries persist well into winter for enjoyment by birds. Branches are often cut for fl oral displays. The fruit is very high in vitamins C, A and E, and makes a delicious substitute for orange juice when sweetened, the fl avor like a blend of orange and passionfruit. The fruit is also made into sauces, jellies and a base for liqueurs. So tough and disease resistant it has survived for centuries in Siberia. Tolerates salt spray so it’s ideal for coastal plantings. Plant in almost any location with at least ½ day of sun. Requires 1 male for every 6 to 8 female plants for pollination. MICHIGAN STATE Hardy Kiwi


Zones 4-7–Delicious fruits like super-size grapes. The female kiwis produce 1 inch fruits, rich in vitamin C, with kiwi fl avor and smooth skin. Fruits ripen in September and October. Vines grow 15 to 20 feet and usually bear fruit 3 to 4 years after planting. NOTE: 1 male plant polli- nates up to 8 female plants. 2 yr. 1 to 2 ft. bareroot plants.

(Hippophae rhamnoides)–Zones 3-8 One of the most widely grown hardy fruiting plants in the world – yet most Americans have never heard of it. The large, ornamental shrubs grow 6 to 10 feet tall with narrow silver leaves. Abun- dant clusters of 3

Zones 5-9–Fruits with fl avor and texture like banana or vanilla cus- tard. No wonder some folks call it the “Hoosier Banana.” This interesting and ornamental U.S. native is slow growing, reaching 12 to 15 feet at matu- rity, (taller in warmer regions) with large, 12 inch, tropical-looking leaves. Fruits are odd-shaped, 3 to 6 inches long and some up to 1 pound, with a creamy custard-like texture and delicious sweet banana fl avor. They are unusually high in protein and vitamins A and C. Harvest when fruit color turns from green to yellow, about late September. Pawpaws are naturally disease and pest resistant. They prefer moist, slightly acid soil and partial shade in hot dry areas.
