Unlike other mountain ash, Rabina has remarkably good tasting fruit with a sweet-tart, non-bitter fl avor. Figs can be grown in colder climates if they are pruned as a bush and covered in winter or grown in a tub and wintered inside. The small ornamental trees with their large tropical-looking leaves will grow 8 to 10 feet tall if left unpruned. Figs are culinary de- lights, wonderful for fresh eat- ing, jams and dried fruit. MEADER PERSIMMON Meader American Persimmon
30885–Zones 5-9–The only available persimmon that is reliably self-fertile. This persimmon selected by Professor Elwyn Meader in New Hampshire bears delicious orange fruits that are extremely sweet with a tomato-like texture when ripe. A frost enhances their fl avor. Unripe fruits can be frozen or dried. Use them for making delectable cookies, cakes and other treats, or dry them for a date-like fl avor. Fruit ripens in late September. Grows up to 30 feet tall, but can easily be kept at 12 to 15 feet. The lustrous dark green leaves turn crimson in fall.
