Car Test Honda Civic e:HEV

This month we review the sumptuous all-new Civic e:HEV, the 11th generation of its iconic global compact car. The Civic is a self-charging, full hybrid, meaning it can run on electricity alone and there is no need to plug it in. We tested the 2.0 eHEV Sport 5dr CVT model and relished the superb levels of comfort and design ingenuity, matched by an assured on-road performance which was as economical as it was thrilling. As you can gather from the inset image, the eHEV Sport is a truly spacious car. There are huge amounts of legroom and the foldable three-split rear sits create a cavernous space when you need it, in an already roomy car. But where Honda have really cracked it in the last decade is in realising that drivers don’t want to be presented with the dichotomy between space and style: why shouldn’t a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol fully hybrid hatchback also be attractive, indeed sporty to look at. I’m sure we’ve all turned our heads at a Honda Civic at some point, on the petrol station forecourt or out on the road, and it really is a joy to behold. There’s the sleek lines of the bonnet giving it that sporty, road-hungry look, the raked back headlight combinations, the steep-angled, high windscreen giving the driver almost panoramic vision, and all leading to the characteristic Civic grille sculpted

We took our Civic e:HEV on a coastal route in Southern England, mixing business and pleasure. The A259 from Folkestone to Hastings is not the exactly like driving on carpet and the winds whipping across St Mary’s Bay offer challenges to both surface and driver, but our Civic e:HEV was secure and responsive throughout and in the endless twists, turns and roundabouts on the approach to Brighton it cornered with outstanding grip and control. The 2.0 litre engine has a top sped of 111 mph, reaches 62 mph in 7.6 seconds and returns a reasonable 56.4 mpg. Honda’s e:HEV full hybrid technology can run silently on pure electric power, delivering up to 315 Nm of torque. It also has a range of up to 521 miles in real-world driving and achieves CO2 emissions as low as 89g/km without sacrificing comfort or performance. So if you’re looking for a hybrid hatchback which combines comfort, performance and style we suggest you take a closer look at the hugely impressive Honda eHEV Sport, the range starts at £36,495 on the road.
