Car Test Kia ProCeed 1.5 T-GDi ‘GT-Line’

In today’s Kia spread we look at the Niro and ProCeed, two excellent vehicles that fly the flag for South Korea’s leading car manufacturer.

An eclectic estate car. No frills, no fluff, just solid South Korean engineering. That would be our strapline for the Kia ProCeed 1.5 T-GDi, here at Car Test.

After road testing for a week, we were impressed with it on several fronts. Whether it be the no-nonsense road handling or the spacious passenger interior, it was hard to baulk at the car’s value for money (more on that later).

So to start - who is the ProCeed for? Well families would come high up the list. The estate nature means room towards the back and boot is bountiful, so you’ll have little trouble loading in shopping bags and the like. Utilise the 60:40 split folding seat feature to free up even more room - ideal for everyday runarounds.

Another aspect that makes the ProCeed ideal for families: the safety features. Car manufactures can never be too careful when providing state of the art safety inclusions as standard - and Kia provides them in

abundance. Lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, hill start assist… all welcome attributes that add an extra layer of comfort when navigating urban streets and motorways alike.

It’s a case of sturdiness and reliability. Just look at the seven year, one- hundred-thousand mile warranty, an especially generous offering that shows how much Kia trusts in the output of their vehicles. The handling was excellent, tough on corners but forgiving in ride comfort, and it’s a frugal beast too. We weren’t far off the combined 48.7 mpg after a week of testing (especially noteworthy given that we racked up several Somerset to London journeys during our road test).

Handling is spot on even when raking round bends; the brakes are very good, smooth and efficient - never for one moment felling incapable even when under hard braking conditions

And the price? £26,190 OTR. Now that’s good going. If you’re on the hunt for a top of the range family motor that caters to all the wants and needs of everyday urban living, then the Kia ProCeed should certainly be high up the list.

A hybrid-electric vehicle for contemporary living is an apt description for the Niro. It delivers on all fronts, from boasting a mightily impressive mpg rating to ensuring a safe and secure driving environment.

And where better to start than the engine. We were lucky enough to road test the 1.6 litre GDI, which injected a welcome punchiness to the overall ride feel. It was nicely reactive, making for a nimble driving experience

Let’s move on to the exterior. It’s contoured and chunky, presenting itself as a spacious family car that’s non-garish and non-descript, ideal for suburban living. Speaking of which, an array of mod-cons feature to make city living (and family raising) a walk in the park. Think touchscreens, smartphone connectivity and several on-board safety mechanisms. More on that later.

Inside it’s a generous five seater SUV, epitomising the quintessential family set-up. Fold up the chairs to create additional space within, freeing up more room for heavy boot loads (so half-term camping trips will go down

a treat). Parking sensors mean you’re protected against avoidable scrapes and knocks and the on-board infotainment system means the little ones won’t distract you whilst you’re navigating those infamous multi-storey car parks.

Onto the car’s tech capabilities. It comes with Apple CarPlay as standard, making long motorway trips a doddle. The 10:25” touch screen display is easy to use and the head up display showcases fuel use, battery life and average speed clearly (a welcome trait given the car’s hybrid electric nature).

When it comes to handling – faultless! With very smooth acceleration all the way up to 70mph and way, way beyond (where permitted) and a 0-60 time of under 8 seconds this great looking car is quick enough for most.

So then, when it comes to cold hard cash, where does the KIA Niro PHEV 1.6 GDI land? On the road comes in at just over £39,000. That may seem punchy, but when you consider the vehicle’s hybrid capabilities (which makes every fill up go the extra mile), it’s not bad going by any means.
