The site currently holds over 1,300 people, including world class scientists working in a variety of fields, such as accelerator science, high performance computing, simulation and data analytics and sensors and detectors.

The campus is used by many universities as well as an increasing number of industrial companies. The campus is home to over 150 high-tech companies including areas such as advanced engineering, digital, ICT, biomedical and energy and environmental technologies.

The businesses vary from start-up companies to more mature SME’s, and to larger international corporates, such as IBM and ATOS. All these companies are catered for with a mix of flexible high-quality office, laboratory and technical spaces.

Consisting of Runcorn and Widnes, the Borough of Halton is home to many thriving businesses in the science, technology and advanced manufacturing sector.

Halton is a place where people are choosing to live, work and visit more than ever before. Thousands of jobs have been created and there has been recent significant investment into the borough. Over the past four years, the number of enterprises have risen by 4%, and employment risen by2%, both higher than the national average.

Runcorn

Sandon Global has begun operations at its new 14,500 m2 manufacturing and office premises in Manor Park, Runcorn. Funded, in part, with a £2m grant from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the plant is a precision engineering facility producing laser engraved anilox equipment for the international printing industry.

Established in 2004, employing 82 employees from the region and supplying almost 70 countries worldwide, Sandon Global has been at the forefront of its industry due to continuous investment in research and development, including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Manchester.

John Millington, Sandon Global CEO, said: “Thanks to the commitment of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Strategic Investment Fund, we continue to be a leading player in the global print industry and this new state-of- the-art production and office facility enables us to expand our capacity and bring the world to Runcorn to see what true print innovation looks like today”.

Fresenius Kabi UK has expanded its existing operations in Runcorn, Cheshire, to further increase the supply of medicines for the therapy and care of critically and chronically ill patients. The investment of around €9.5m brought new high- skilled jobs to the area in the coming years. A new Distribution and Operations Centre was built next to the existing headquarters in Runcorn to provide warehouse capacity required for further growth in the UK hospital and homecare businesses, as well as a new aseptic compound centre, allowing for an increased manufacturing capacity of compounded home parenteral nutrition products.

The Heath Business & Technical Park provides 250,000 ft2 of office and laboratory space with over 120 businesses from a wide variety of sectors, creating jobs for almost 2000 people. Additional services include technical support, extensive conferencing and meeting facilities, including a 120 seat lecture theatre, events, gym, café and business lounge.

Owners SOG are now hoping to transform the site in the next 20-30 years into a 21st century version of Port Sunlight Village. The development would aspire to be net zero carbon, with a ground-breaking vertical farm at its heart, powered by hydrogen and producing healthy, net zero food for the local community.

With the recent Violet development, it provides the opportunity for companies to have their own building on the campus supporting its “Home for Life” philosophy. The campus continues to realise its growth plans. Ultimately, this will deliver almost 1m ft2 of space for scientific, business and research facilities, creating up to 10,000 jobs on the site.

Widnes

NHS Supply Chain Gorsey Point, a new 393,000 ft2 purpose-built regional distribution centre (RDC) in Widnes, will replace the existing Runcorn site operated by NHS Supply Chain’s logistics provider, Unipart Logistics.

With over 60,000 pallet spaces, the new RDC will provide enhanced supply chain resilience as it has the ability to hold increased levels of stock. This will enable more effective responses to changes and peaks in demand. The Gorsey Point site in Widnes is only six miles away from the current site, so the valuable experience and expertise of the local workforce have been retained as well as new jobs created.

HBC Field On a total site of 55 acres, Alstom chose HBC Field, Widnes for the largest rolling stock modernisation facility in the UK, a 300,000 ft2 technology centre and training academy in Widnes. In 2020, Alstom won a seven-year deal with Avanti West Coast worth £642 million for the refurbishment and maintenance of 56 Class 390 Pendolino trains. More than 100 jobs will be created by the contract, mostly at the company’s Widnes site, while it secures work for Alstom depots across the UK. Alstom has been committed to recruiting from the local area, and the majority of the 80-strong repainting team being assembled for the painting contract have come from the Liverpool City Region, including apprentices from Riverside College Halton.

Also on HBC Field, plans for a 545,000 sq ft warehouse scheme have been submitted by Marshall CDP, boasting 181 parking bays for HGVs, and is expected to create 500 full time jobs and 600 construction jobs.

As part of Warburtons’ £56m investment programme, a new warehouse was opened in Widnes in 2021, with approximately 215,000 products delivered to stores nationwide within 12 hours. 27 new roles were created to develop a team of 119.

Carpenter Additive Carpenter_Additive_Widnes

In 2007(2017), LPW Technology Ltd completed the build of their 90,000 ft2 headquarters and manufacturing facility in Widnes. A high specification, tech clean space was required and a joint venture between DB Symmetry and Halton Borough Council helped LPW to relocate and expand from its base in Runcorn. In 2018, LPW Technology Ltd was bought by US-based Carpenter Technology Corporation for $81 million to form Carpenter Additive, specialising in metal additive manufacturing.

The expansion is expected to enable the creation of 120 jobs, in addition to the current 70 local employees. The project is considered an exemplar of public and private collaboration.
