Car Test Hyundai i30 Sibling rivalry - The eternal fight for greatness.

Established in 1967, Hyundai Motor Company is committed to becoming a lifetime partner in automobiles and beyond with its range of world-class vehicles and mobility services offered available in more than 200 countries. Employing more than 110,000 employees worldwide, Hyundai sold more than 4.5 million vehicles globally. Hyundai continues to enhance its product line-up with vehicles that are helping to build solutions for a more sustainable future.

Starting with the Hyundai i30, beautifully crafted with smooth, fluid lines and a dynamic shape, along with a style and flair that turns heads. The new i30’s exterior design is both bold and sleek, giving it more “emotional” appeal. The front is characterised by a wider-looking, more modern stance. The wider grille features an accentuated 3D pattern that emphasises the agile look of the car. Beauty alone, however, may not be enough and we found that every element has been designed to enhance and assist its

performance, making the all-new Hyundai i30 a pure pleasure for us to test drive. This is a rugged versatile hatchback and by positioning its bonnet low with an all-new aggressive looking front bumper and incorporating air intakes, it has been consciously designed to improve aerodynamics, reduce turbulence and airflow is now channelled more efficiently, increasing fuel economy and performance. The curved edges of the door mirrors also reduce blind spots and its streamlined windows not only look dramatic, they offer superb all-round visibility. Created for maximum driving fun, the i30 N has been upgraded with more performance, fresh new design features and the latest smart tech.

The i30 N Performance 2.0 T-GDi 280PS 8 speed DCT we tested gets lots of added features, including: an exclusive N interior design package, driver’s seat memory function, rain sensor, 360-degree rear view parking camera, heated front seats and a 10.25” touchscreen infotainment centre to name but a few, and our personal favourite: the performance driving data system - where you are now able to monitor and improve your driving performance with updated graphics for even more ease of use. See: PS, torque, turbo boost, G-force as well as a lap and acceleration timer all in a pinch making this car truly is one of Hyundai’s best. Please visit Hyundai’s website for full specifications.

The variety of our work takes us from the green and brownfield sites of Somerset to the narrow and demanding streets of central London. There’s nothing we like more than good clean muddy fun with a mix of twists, turns and traverses to get the adrenaline pumping. Testing the i30 N on rough terrain, we found a capable hatchback able to negotiate flooded roads and steep gradients with ease. We found that whatever the road surface and pace at which we were safely able to travel, the i30 N is adaptable, responsive and very roomy for a sporty hatchback. We recommend you take a close look as we did.

Available from £33,290. The Hyundai i30, is the commodious but agile family-friendly hatchback you need. For full details and specifications please visit www.hyundai.co.uk or call 0800 981 981.

Hyundai i20

Next up we have the i30’s smaller brother the aptly named i20, a sleek hatchback showcasing in our opinion Hyundai’s expertise at its very best. The i20 N is based Hyundai’s rally winning i20 Coupe WRC. It shares the shape and many of the features, but is aesthetically designed to look ready for the city with the power in the trunk for several nail biting laps at Brands Hatch. The i20 N is a solid racing car and can work as an all-rounder in a pinch - it handles tight corners and rides with ease, plus the roomy interior and flexibility of the rear seating will appeal to growing families.

The driving position is very comfortable and makes you feel very much in control with its keyless entry and start. Its commanding small stature on the outside is truly deceiving as the room inside is remarkable, you are immediately struck with how sharp and streamlined the interior really is with the beautiful leather/cloth black N sports seat with

performance blue stitching illuminating upon entry. With all the bells and whistles you’d come to expect from Hyundai such as mood lighting, heated front seats and steering wheel, a 10.25” touchscreen centre console with satellite navigation, high beam assist, forward collision avoidance assist and our personal favourite - rev matching controlled downshift with double-declutching function: press the red button on the steering wheel to synchronise the engine and output shaft for smoother or sportier gear changes. All these perks truly add to this small but mighty car’s sense of luxury and comfort.

The i20 N is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with a six- speed manual transmission. This engine is the first of a new generation to feature in a European Hyundai model and delivers a maximum output of 204PS and a maximum torque of 275nm for ultimate power delivery. With 1,190kg of weight just as the i20 Coupe WRC, the power- to-weight ratio is one of the best in class. The i20 N delivers a maximum speed of 143 mph and can go from 0 – 62 mph in just 6.2 seconds. The i20 N is absolutely on par with the rally vehicle that inspired its construction when it comes to pure power.

The Hyundai i20 has moved a world away from the chunky, uncertain designs of hatchbacks of old and has a commanding yet graceful appearance on the road. Out on the road or indeed on any surface this car seems to suit any condition thrown at it, after being struck by a predictable May shower we felt safe at all times and the car handled the low-grip conditions with absolute grace and elegance. The car’s overall performance and handling in any weather condition thrown at it was exceptional.

The Hyundai i20 is an outstanding modern, technologically astute car and we highly recommend you take as test drive as we did. Prices start from £24,805. For full details and specifications please visit www.hyundai.co.uk or call 0800 981 981.
