The North West

The Furness Peninsular - Leading the way on Net Zero

Across the Furness peninsular, world class

businesses are putting Westmorland and Furness at the forefront of decarbonisation. Due to the proximity to the Irish Sea they have production assets for offshore wind, gas, low carbon generation and storage opportunities and a fast growing sector in clean growth and innovation.

The Port of Barrow acts as a gateway to this

growth, serving local and national

industry and manufacturing, and hosting world-class

one of the UK’s most experienced energy infrastructure

shipbuilding. Carlton Power, development companies,

has secured the Government’s support – subject to final agreement – to build a green hydrogen hub in Barrow-on-Furness.

The Barrow Green Hydrogen hub will supply hydrogen to Kimberly-Clark’s manufacturing facility at Barrow-in-Furness. Spirit Energy is moving forward with plans to convert its depleted South Morecambe and North Morecambe gas fields and Barrow Terminals into a world-class carbon storage cluster.

Brilliant Barrow

With more than £40 million of regeneration investment

already secured, an first exciting

transformation is ahead for Barrow-in-Furness. Barrow was among the

towns in

the country to secure £25m from the Government’s Towns Fund for seven exciting projects that will help the area to thrive for generations.

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY MONTHLY 2023 31

From a new Learning Quarter to an active travel infrastructure, support programme for start- ups and entrepreneurship and a network of community hubs including a £6 million Outdoor Learning Centre located within a protected beachside setting, the #BrilliantBarrow Town Deal is changing the future of the town.

A further £17.5 million regeneration scheme funded via Levelling Up will reinvigorate the town centre so it

is ready to embrace a

prosperous and healthy future. All projects are at an advanced stage with

planning permission actively being sought or already in place and delivery on track for late 2024.

Transforming lives through education and skills

Westmorland and Furness are an ambitious council; ambitious for everyone.

They want to help key sectors to recruit and retain staff and seek to enable and encourage young people and families to live and thrive in our area.
