Kia – Together in electric dreams Car Test

W

e take a look now at two terrific SUVs from Kia – the Stonic 1.0 TDi-Gdi 2 and Niro 1.6 PHEV3. The Stonic is a compact SUV with bags of agility. Part of the supermini set, the Stonic can be fun and fabulous in a range of twenty different two-tone colour combinations, including five different roof colours. It’s the smallest of Kia’s SUV line-up yet that didn’t stop it winning the Red Dot Design Award 2018 sitting alongside past winners who include Apple, Porsche and Ferrari. The bright contemporary design of this five-door includes 17” alloy wheels, Bi-function Projection Headlights with Static Bending for optimum illumination when cornering, roof rails and robust wheel arch and sills marking its all- terrain capabilities. Its smart styling continues inside the spacious

The Niro opens out to a black leather interior with heated seats and sports steering wheel. The oceanic blue accoutrement first seen outlining Niro’s fog lamps continues around the clearly laid out instrument panel with splashes throughout a spacious cabin. Contoured upholstery throughout with plenty of leg and headroom and a wide with 8” touchscreen satellite navigation with European mapping (and charging stops), TomTom, reversing camera system and 8-speaker JBL Premium Sound System ensures a comfortable, airy journey. The 147l boot is not massive as a fair chunk of its boot space is taken up by its battery which is included nonetheless in the famous Kia 7-year warranty, but it will be enough family outings with roof rails as standard The Niro is practical and easy to drive,

cabin with a well-appointed instrument panel running with the colour thematics of its exterior. The 7” touchscreen navigation with traffic messaging hooks up with Apple Carplay and DAW can even sense by your driving when you may be fatigued and recommends you take a break. But tire of this smart SUV you will not. The Stonic offers a confident drive, holding the road well, cornering with little roll and we particularly liked the Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) which stops the car rolling backwards when pulling away on a steep incline. With 118bhp and a top speed of 115mph, feisty at 0-62mph in just 9.9 seconds, the Stonic is a spacious, fun family car and well worth a look.

There are already 13,000 charging points in the UK and with plans to equip future homes and offices with chargers as standard, the PHEV (or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is fast becoming as familiar to us as the light switch. Kia is now a top ten manufacturer of electric cars in the UK and with the Kia Niro 1.6 Gdi 3 PHEV capabilities blend effortlessly into SUV crossover style and practicality. The Niro is a robust looking car, compact with a broad distinctive honeycomb grille. Its characterful yellow and white LED headlamp design and bejewelled rear taillights that arch neatly across the tailgate demonstrate Kia’s close attention to detail. Air intake gills and side dorsal contours give the Niro the sleek desirability of the most expensive Koi while chrome flashes throughout its body. Its 16” alloy wheels boast of its 6-speed SUV capabilities.
