Skoda Fountain Car Test
E
arlier this year we had the pleasure of testing two superb Skoda SUVs. First we’ll be taking a closer look at the Skoda Kodiaq Scout 2.0 TSI, a seven-seater vehicle that is perfect for country-side adventures as well as navigating through urban jungles. Our first impressions of this car were an intriguing blend of the rugged and the beautiful. The 19” alloy Crater Anthracite wheels and silver wing-mirrors are certainly striking and we were impressed by the eye-catching Kodiaq inscription on the door sill that added a nice note of quality, and the Scout insignia is framed on both front wings, setting this model apart. And it’s a true off-road vehicle, the new Kodiaq Scout has a robust front bumper and spoiler for those steep descents and its off-road package offers ultimate underbody protection and the Scout’s rear bumper with silver protective cover provides added safety. Getting behind the wheel, we experienced the luxurious Alcantara seats and the whole interior ensures both style and comfort. The décor encompasses a wood-finish dashboard, a stylistic touch and there’s ambient lighting on the driver and passenger doors. The Kodiaq Scout is packed out with clever technological features too, such as an inclusive SmartLink+ system, which provides access to many connectivity bundles, including Apple CarPlay. The Kodiaq Scout yields a very generous 44.8 mpg and has a responsive engine power of 150PS. We enjoyed our week with the Kodiaq and suggest you take a close look, too.
On to the Skoda Karoq Edition 2.0 TDi, a handsome and robust 4x4 and Skoda’s replacement for the popular Yeti SUV. Rumours abound that this is the best priced performance SUV on the market. From the outside, the design is chiselled and rugged as you would expect from a 4x4, with the imposing front grille, 19” alloy wheels and sleek LED lights, giving the Karoq a smart and modern tone. An off-road package with engine and chassis guards, a reversing camera and adaptive cruise control all contribute to a highly efficient and enjoyable driving experience. On the inside, the Karoq is full of features designed for drivers who need space, flexibility and maximum performance, without compromising on comfort or style. The cabin is classy and comfortable, with many ingenious features focused on the driver, while the driving position offers comfort and control off-road without it feeling like you’re

driving an especially big car. The model we tested was equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which offers a range of impressive features such as Smartlink phone connectivity and satellite navigation, with the cherry on top being the amazing 10-speaker Canton Sound System. As you would expect from a modern family SUV, practicality is paramount, with the Karoq offering abundant clever storage solutions as well as Skoda’s VarioFlex seat system, in which seats can be individually removed or folded (in contrast to the traditional fully folding back bench), allowing you to choose between heaving load or passenger space. Under the bonnet is Volkswagen’s 2.0 litre TDI engine, producing 150 bhp, a very competitive 0-62 time of 8.2 seconds and plenty of power and torque – ideal if you plan on using the car to tow. The excellent DSG gearbox was an absolute joy, with the automatic gear changes barely noticeable when accelerating from lower speeds. We found a highlight of the Karoq was just how quiet the cabin was, experiencing very little tyre noise even at high speeds, adding to the impressive interior comfort. For such a large car, the Skoda Karoq delivers economically as well, offering up to 56.6 mpg and C02 emissions of just 138g/km. The Skoda Kodiaq range starts at £24, 330 and the Karoq is available from £28, 860. For more information visit
