Car Test BMW M3 – the most powerful sports saloon, comfortably
I
n this issue we review the mouth-watering BMW M3. As you can see, the M3 is a truly beautiful sports saloon, the long sloping bonnet, the raked back head-lamp configuration, the gorgeous spoked 19-inch alloys with wide racing tyres, and of course the iconic BMW grille in all its finest racing livery. But this car isn’t just a looker. BMW's mid-sized super-saloon is powered by the M Twinpower Turbo power unit, a straight-six engine which drives through the rear wheels with a super, controlled urgency. We really loved the outstanding responsiveness and output, and for a vehicle in this class cornering and tricky three-point manoeuvres were surprisingly nimble – and emissions and fuel consumption are reduced. Climbing into the luxurious cockpit we appreciated the lightweight M-specific seats, which offer optimal support during sporty driving, and there are nice touches throughout the cabin, such as the multi-function leather steering wheel with M stitching and gearshift paddles, dual- zone climate control, BMW's excellent iDrive system with an 8.8-inch screen, Sat Nav, DAB radio and connected drive services.
Out on the open road you feel in total control, which is enhanced by the Drive Performance Control system. This allows you to alter the character of the M3 over a wider range
than before, via three buttons on the centre console. You get the choice of Efficiency, Sport and Sport+ modes which allow you to choose how the car adapts to various surfaces and conditions. But where the BMW M3 really stands out is in its ability to be very quick and keen one moment, and soothingly comfortable the next, the sports pedigree is undoubtedly in this car’s DNA, but it also rewards you with a four-door body and a huge 480-litre boot to make everyday family life that bit more enjoyable.
For many the benchmark of sports performance is the BMW M4 coupé, but BMW assure us that the M3 and M4 are equal in performance. BMW M Division's development boss, Albert Biermann, has stated that during testing at the Nürburgring the cars performed identically: “We’ve run both cars extensively and they are inseparable in lap time” he tells us. The M3 is certainly exhilarating when unleashed on the track, but crucially it’s also smooth and comfortable in all other, more conservative forms of motoring.
The BMW M3 is available from £59,905. for full details or to book a test drive call 0800 325600 or visit
