the North West Halton; A modern and connected economy

T

he prosperity of Halton is based on strong economic foundations and an increasingly diverse, modern and vibrant economy.

Sectors like Advanced Manufacturing, engineering, logistics, ICT and pharmaceuticals play a major part in our success.

Halton has the workforce to meet the demands of the new economy, who are skilled, motivated and flexible - and supported by high achieving schools and FE Institutions and value for money sites and premises. That’s why in 2017, the French owned train maker Alstom, chose Halton to locate it’s 130,000 sq. ft. rolling stock modernisation facility. Alstom has already started work on the £28 million project to refurbish the fleet of Pendolino trains, used by Virgin on the West Coast Main Line.

The internationally significant Sci-Tech Daresbury Enterprise Zone, one of only two centres for ‘big scale science’ in the UK, boasts the most powerful supercomputer in the country - dedicated to industrial and commercial applications, and positioning the campus at the heart of the global ‘Big Data Revolution’.

A bridge to prosperity

The Mersey Gateway is the major new six lane bridge across the River Mersey, that opened in Autumn 2017. This landmark structure has been identified as one of the most important infrastructure projects in the UK, providing a major new strategic transport route linking the Liverpool City Region and the North West to the rest of the country. In the first six months of operation over 10million journeys were made over the bridge.

The Mersey Gateway brings substantial benefits to the regional road network, but it is more than just a bridge. It’s the next step in our ambitious plan for continued growth.

The miles of new road associated with the new bridge provide a unique opportunity to open-up sites, on both sides of the River Mersey. We have developed a ten year vision to regenerate key areas of Halton, building upon our existing unique assets, strengths and opportunities.

That vision is called The Mersey Gateway Regeneration Plan Plus.

The initiative is being driven by a unique partnership between the UK government and IBM.

The next phase in the rapid development of this site is called, ‘Project Violet’. This ambitious project follows the opening in 2017 of the £20m Techspace One and Techspace Two buildings. Project Violet will create a additional 42,000 sq. ft. of three storey high grade A offices.

We also have3MG, a multi-modal hub of national significance. This site has a direct connection to the West Coast Mainline. This logistics park covers one hundred and eighty hectares and handles, in excess of, 140,000 containers each year, of which some 60,000 are moved by rail.

3MG has outline consent for a total of 2.8 m sq ft of new build - anchor tenants include Tesco and Eddie Stobart.

This period of economic growth looks set to continue, with the recently opened Mersey Gateway Bridge further improving connectivity and boosting commercial confidence.

A Big Opportunity

The Mersey Gateway Regeneration Plan Plus sets out our ambition for growth. In total, around 200 hectares of new and existing development land could be released over the next ten years.

Once fully developed these sites have the potential to accommodate up to 20,000 jobs over the next fifteen years. As recent growth shows, we’re committed to working in partnership with the private sector to continue delivering success for Halton.

It is a ten-year vision that can deliver jobs, homes and investment, and the opening of the Mersey Gateway is the catalyst that can make it happen.
