Interview with Alan White, Chief Executive, Malvern Hills Science Park What attracts technology businesses to Malvern Hills Science Park?

We recently discussed the opportunities for science and technology companies at Malvern Hills Science Park in South Worcestershire. Alan White, the Chief Executive of Malvern Hills Science Park gave us some insights into the history of the park, the current offer, and future growth plans.

Malvern Hills Science Park (MHSP) has been established for over 25 years, could you just explain some of the heritage of the Malvern site.

AW: Malvern has a long legacy of research and technology development dating back to the Second World War when the Telecommunications Research Establishment was established here.

This evolved in later years to become the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment until privatisation in 2000 when it became QinetiQ. MHSP was created through a partnership with Worcestershire County Council, Malvern Hills District Council and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce.

The partners had the foresight to recognise that a science park could capture commercial ideas ‘spinning-out’ as new businesses from the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment, which by then had become a renowned centre for microwave, infrared, radar technology, and liquid crystals.

How has the Science Park grown since its inception?

AW: We have over 40 tenant companies on our site with a wide variety of specialisations from communication and defence tech- nology to cybersecurity and life sciences. Tenants occupy units from 250 – 25,000 sq ft.

To accommodate that we now have five phases of development on site with room for further expansion.

Malvern Hills

The Malvern Hills district, located in Worcestershire, England, is an excellent location for businesses looking to establish a foothold in centre of the United Kingdom. With its stunning natural beauty, excellent transport links, qualified workforce and thriving business community, the district is a smart choice for companies seeking a strategic location in the heart of England. The area is easily accessi- ble from major cities such as Birmingham, Bristol, and Cardiff and located close to the M5 and M50 motorways, providing easy access to the rest of the country. The district is also served by two major railway stations, making it a convenient location for businesses that require regular travel – London is just over two ½ hours away.

Recent commercial property investments in the district have also contributed to its attractiveness as a business location. The Malvern Hills Science Park, for example, is a state-of-the-art facility that pro- vides office and laboratory space for high-tech companies. The park offers a range of amenities, including conference facilities, meeting rooms, and a cafe. There are a range of individual units and lab- oratory facilities, from 350 to 2000 sq ft, with flexible lease terms available. There is also land available for bespoke development and third-party enquiries are welcomed.

Other recent investments in the district include at Indurent Park Broomhall which provides modern warehouse space and facilities for businesses of all sizes in a location close to the M5 motorway. The first two phases are fully let and Phase 3 (comprising of two units of 40,000 SqFt and 32,000 SqFt) was completed earlier in 2025 and both units are currently available for occupation. site offering up to 225,000 Sqft of flexible units in a prime rural loca- tion positioned on the A38 with access to the city of Worcester with wider connectivity to the Midlands and Southwest via the M5 and South Wales via the M50. The district is home to a diverse range of businesses, from small startups to multinational corporations with a strong focus on innovation and technology. For example, ZX Lidars, a global leader in wind measurement technology, expanded its oper- ations in Malvern with a new 30,000 SqFt headquarters at Willow End Business Park near Malvern. The company provides vital wind data for renewable energy worldwide and the development deliv- ers high-quality jobs, fosters clean growth, and supports Malvern’s reputation for innovation.

In addition to the business opportunities, the Malvern Hills district also offers a high quality of life for employees. The area is renowned for its natural beauty and a range of cultural and recreational activi- ties, with the Malvern Hills providing a stunning backdrop to daily life. The nationally renowned Malvern Theatres has been awarded £20M Levelling Up funding for a major expansion scheduled to commence in October 2025.

The Science Park is able to offer the infrastructure that technology companies need to grow and thrive. We can fit out units to tenants’ specifications which range from high security premises to ‘wet labs’ and everything in between.

We also provide the usual range of services that you would expect to find in any managed office environment which includes reception, meeting rooms and an excellent café on site. Tenants also enjoy working with like-minded businesses and benefit from a great loca- tion at the foot of the Malvern Hills.

The Malvern Hills is indeed a beautiful place! How easy is it to get from Malvern to other parts of the country?

AW: The building of the Southern Link Road in the past few years has significantly improved access to Malvern.

Birmingham, Bristol, Cheltenham and Hereford are within easy reach, making Malvern Hills Science Park a cornerstone of ‘Cyber Valley’ (which includes GCHQ down the road in Cheltenham). Recent improvements to Worcestershire Parkway Railway station makes London just a two-hour train journey away.

Do you have any units available at present?

Yes, we have fully serviced units ranging in size from 250sq ft to 2,600sq ft. We also have laboratory space available for any prospec- tive tenant who needs one ready fitted. We have ample free parking and plenty of charging points for drivers of electric cars.

For businesses considering Malvern Hills Science Park, my advice would be to visit and see what we have to offer.
