North Northamptonshire: A Space for Business, an Ecosystem for Growth
Commercial Property Monthly talk to George Candler, Executive Director for Place and Economy about how North Northamptonshire Council are shaping a new vision for the area as a sustainable home for both existing businesses and those looking to invest from around the world. In this Q&A, George outlines his vision and the key strengths that North Northamptonshire can deliver...
CPM: George, for those unfamiliar, what makes North Northamptonshire such an attractive location for investment?
George Candler: North Northamptonshire offers a compelling mix of strategic location, strong connectivity, and ambitious growth plans. We’re positioned at the heart of the UK’s transport network, with direct access to the A14, A1, M1, and M6, and excellent rail links to the Midlands, London and Eurostar services. That makes us ideally placed for businesses looking to reach both national and international markets.
CPM: Transport and connectivity are clearly big selling points. How do these translate into opportunities for investors?
George: Proximity and access are critical in today’s economy. Whether it’s advanced manufacturing, logistics, or professional services, businesses need to move people, goods, and data efficiently. North Northamptonshire delivers on all counts. Our transport infrastructure is not only well established, but we’re also investing in further enhancements to support sustainable growth. In addition, we are also one of the best places in the UK for full-fibre connectivity. This creates a low- friction environment for businesses to scale.
CPM: You’ve mentioned sustainable growth. How important is green infrastructure to your plans?
George: Sustainability is at the heart of our strategy. We were one of the first places in the UK to have a nature recovery strategy approved by government and we’re committed to creating an investment environment that supports net zero ambitions.
That includes green energy projects, high-quality green spaces, and sustainable urban extensions that integrate biodiversity and carbon reduction. For investors, this means access to forward-thinking developments designed for the future.
CPM: What about talent and workforce—how does North Northamptonshire support business needs in this area?
George: Our location gives businesses access to a broad labour market across the East Midlands, West Midlands, and South East. We work closely with education providers, training organisations, and industry partners to develop the skills employers need, from apprenticeships to higher-level qualifications, as well as delivering regular large scale Recruitment, Skills and Careers events. This ensures businesses can recruit and retain the right people locally.
CPM: Are there particular sectors that you see as strong growth opportunities?
George: We have strengths across a range of sectors— logistics, advanced manufacturing, clean technologies, agri-tech, and creative industries are all performing well. The breadth of our economy, combined with our infrastructure, creates a stable base for investment in both established and emerging industries.
CPM: For potential investors reading this, what’s your message?
George: North Northamptonshire is open for business. We offer an unrivalled combination of location, connectivity, sustainable growth potential, as well as one of the fastest growing, working age populations in the UK. Whether you’re looking for a base to reach national markets, a site for innovation, or a long-term investment in a forward-looking economy, North Northamptonshire has the assets, the ambition, and the support to make it happen!
