BURSTING AT THE SEAMS Wootton says that several million square feet of studio space is now being planned for or built in the UK. “I can tell you pretty much every bit of has already got a blue pencil on it,” he says. For example, Shinfield Studios opened four stages
in October last year, and is developing the site with another 14 stages that will start to come on stream in regular intervals from October this year until the development is completed in 2024. Disney took up residence as soon as the studios opened, and Netflix are currently filming at the studios. It’s a similar story at Sky Studios Elstree, which is
set to open the first of its 13 stages April ahead of a full launch in the autumn. Sky Studios Elstree will mainly be home to Sky
originals, as well as films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features and Working Title, and television series from Universal Studio Group. It will also have capacity to host some productions from third party producers. “I think we’ll be we’ll be running pretty full from
when we open,” says Sky Studios COO Caroline Cooper. “I just know from all the talks we’ve had with producers for our own shows, and also from Universal, that there is a lot that is looking for space. We’ll be turning stuff away rather than the other way around.”
Over at Twickenham Film Studios, managing
director Cara Sheppard is overseeing a phased redevelopment and expansion of the legendary studio site that will take place over the next 18 months. Unlike many studios, Twickenham offers
something of a ‘full-service’ to productions, with studios as well as dailies and picture and sound editing on site. “We are seeing huge demand,” says Sheppard.
