What is Dolby Hybrik?
Hybrik is a cloud-based media processing platform from Dolby that combines practically every task at the end of the production pipeline. It transcodes between most of the media formats in video and audio, at any scale you need. It accommodates workfl ow, automation, and input and output requirements for studios, broadcasters, streaming providers, and post-production houses.
With customers that include Sony, Universal, MGM/UA, Google, Deluxe, and CBS Interactive, Hybrik is processing hundreds of thousands of hours of content around the world. Every month, for every platform, from the highest-defi nition video and audio to mobile and SD, Hybrik is getting the job done.
Uniquely, it has no per-GB, no per-fi le, and no per-hour pricing; all features are available to all users for one of three fi xed-price monthly subscriptions, to use in whatever mix and at whatever throughput the organisation chooses. By running on the customer’s own AWS or Google Cloud account, with the customer’s own choice of storage, bandwidth, and compute mix, it combines fl exibility with complete control over costs.
How does it work?
Let’s say you’re a production house handling multiple weekly shows, each of which goes to multiple markets. Each of those markets wants a different mix of video and audio formats at different bit rates and resolutions. Some have subtitles, some specifi c language requirements, and so on. Your production pipeline stores each show master as 4K, with a 5.1 audio mix, in a cloud storage bucket.
You combine this information in a simple, structured JSON fi le with a list of what outputs are needed by which encoding format, along with instructions on where different resources – logos, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, metadata, watermarks – are to be found.
You can assign as many cloud resources as you like to each task. This lets you pick the trade-offs between output quality, speed
of processing, and the cost of the cloud instances you use. Send that fi le to the Hybrik service using its RESTful API, and it will automatically manage every aspect of the tasks required. Along the way, it can analyse fi les to produce reports or fl ag problems. There are integrated QC tests for almost any aspect of the input or outputs, from bit rate to blockiness, from audio levels to aspect ratio. There’s even a photosensitive epilepsy detection check.
Each show can use a common template or be fully customised. Once you’ve set things up, Hybrik acts like a plug-in to your pipeline that takes each piece of content through the fi nal stages of readying for distribution.
You can subscribe to Hybrik for 10, 100, or 1,000 simultaneous virtual machines. Each virtual machine acts as an independent media processor, handling transcoding as well as analysis and QC. As with any transcoder, choosing higher-quality output means it takes longer to transcode. That time is also affected by the machine you run it on. Your cloud provider will give you a range of options for speed, memory, and other specifi cations. Hybrik has full, practical guidance on cost-effective confi gurations for any scenario. Hybrik lets the user select just the right balance of performance and cost.
Advanced features simplify production
Because Hybrik manages the usage of your cloud virtual machines, it can offer some very useful options. One is segmented encoding, where the source fi le is divided into multiple pieces that can be simultaneously transcoded on multiple cloud machines. A full- length HD movie can be encoded to the highest quality in a matter of minutes.
This, like all Hybrik features, comes as standard, and with per- second pricing on your cloud machines, the result is extremely cost effective.
