IT’S SPRINGTIME, AND NEW GROWTH IS UNDERWAY In recent weeks, the wider world has managed to segue seamlessly from one tragedy to the next. At the same time, the UK economy is hitting something of a headwind.

This will affect every industry but the film and TV sector in the UK seems more insulated from macro-economic issues than most. For one thing, this country is still the most attractive proposition for the

production of both inward investment and home-grown high-end film and TV. In this issue, we take a look at the incredible and seemingly unstoppable

growth of the UK studios sector. From the expansion of existing studios to the new facilities soon to break ground, investment is pouring in to make sure the UK doesn’t lose the opportunities it’s presented with. In a similar vein, we also zoom in on the UK post sector that is itself

expanding ambitiously, quickly investing in new facilities, tech and workflows to keep up with the demands of more and more HETV work. The high end is also the focus of our Art of the Grade feature, where we

interview top colourists to find out what it takes to make sumptuously crafted drama go to the next level. Another sector benefitting from the upsurge in high-end TV is documentary.

Previously a genre taking second place on the streamers’ wishlist after scripted content, high-end docs are stepping up to share the limelight on both the SVODs and PSBs alike. But the ideas need to be big, and they’re getting bigger. Another sector having a resurgence right now after being hit so hard by

successive lockdowns is live event TV. We focus on a sector that’s gearing up for a big 12 months ahead. All of this great content needs to be shot on something. So, this issue we

take the temperature of the camera rental market to see what the most in- demand models are right now and the cameras that will rule the roost in the year ahead. And as its spring, it must be time for another of our landmark sector surveys

– this issue on the commercials production industry. We find a sector that’s coping with resurgent demand while keeping a focus on staff welfare, diversity - both behind and in front of the camera - and sustainability. Sustainability is also a focus this issue as we take a look at the screen

industry’s efforts to go greener, by not just making sure productions decrease their carbon footprint, but also by normalising sustainable lifestyles through the narrative of the content they produce.
