MANAGEMENT

VESSELS OVER 5000GRT WILL SOON NEED TO REPORT ON FUEL CONSUMPTION AND DISTANCE TRAVELLED TO THEIR FLAG ADMINISTRATION. AND FOR SHIPS OPERATING IN POLAR REGIONS COMPLIANCE WITH A NEW POLAR CODE CAME IN TO EFFECT AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR

maintenance and inventory. Applicable for yachts from 30m to 130m plus, the system is flexible such that individual yachts or 3rd party yacht managers can ‘plug-in’ their SMS and I was left with the impression the system is highly user-friendly and easy to set up.

Should a crew member discover a fault while completing a checklist, the Automated Work-Flow process produces a window where the fault is detailed and allocated to the appropriate department for repair. There’s also an option to take a photo or add the item to the Safety Meeting Agenda with one click.

I liked the fact that Total Superyacht has a whole load of ‘standard’ checklist templates ‘built-in’, anything from a sea-stowage list to guest cabin detailing procedures and much more, so that users can tailor them to suit individual yacht requirements in a short space of time.

The integrated Digital Reference Centre provides crew access to an encyclopedia of advice from experts in areas connected to superyachts such as silver care, leather care,

cocktail-making, laundry science

and service procedures from the GUEST Programme, to name just a few - information available with a few clicks on the iPad.

EfficentSea App claims to be the ‘next big thing’ for captains and crew and company principal, Cameron Lee, says the typical yacht length that would benefit most from the software is anything from 20m to 60m, although larger yachts over 500GT can benefit as well.

For private or commercial yachts under 50m or 500GT it can be used to set up a full complement of vessel documentation and, in his opinion, Ian assures me it can replace shore-side support.

Same as for Total Superyacht, the App can be used in conjunction with yacht management companies as a tool to complete reporting requirements. If a vessel already has an ISM system in place it can be used to complete the reporting process in a paperless fashion. The manager/owner has a login to monitor progress and the submission of forms at any time.

Even though I have not seen the programme work in practice, you only pay for what you

EFFICIENT SEA Efficient Sea is an iPad app designed for the professional management of superyachts. It provides an effective, paperless tool to complete official, legislative or company reporting requirements with traceable archiving and exporting. It serves as an invaluable, at-hand resource for all documentation and relevant maritime statutory codes. There’s everything you need to manage your ISM, MLC compliance, including safety management system, chartering, crew management, accounting, bridge resources, captains resources, engineering maintenance and shipyard needs. Every document, code, manual and form readily available to be completed, signed and emailed, without the need for hard copies, files or scans. Simply brilliant. want and I liked what appeared to the very flexible nature of the App and the fact users can choose forms & documentation from six main sections that apply most to their needs, then subscribe. Forms and documents can be edited and tailored to your vessel, or you can even design your own forms from scratch and save those as your preferred templates.

If say the yacht is dry-docked for an extended period of time, nothing is lost and your information and login details stay in the dedicated cloud storage so when normal operations re-commence, you simply start subscribing once again.

So whilst the human touch is still vital, a true 24/7 service can only be provided with a little help from the clouds.
