WHICH FACTORS WILL INFLUENCE THE FUTURE OF YACHT DESIGN?


In a world where it seems that sometimes no rules apply in terms of realistic deadlines and completion times, 3D Printing in its


various formats can help enormously with this problem. It allows us to not only model the part with precision accuracy and check all areas of functionality it also allows us to produce the actual part or parts, as well as more lightweight fast prototypes for visual confirmation of an idea or concept. Not only are we now able to print structural parts using a whole spectrum of metals from 316 stainless to grade 5 Titanium with absolute accuracy we are also able to reduce the weight of what would traditionally be solid material by designing and printing using material optimization software. In short, we can remove material from what would traditionally be a solid object to create an internal lattice structure tailored to the part requirements.


Superyachts and megayachts are seeing a significant rise in the use of thermal imaging technology and this is set to continue as concerns around security grow. The cameras are also playing a key role in vessel navigation and accident prevention such as man overboard. FLIR has long set the standard for maritime thermal vision and their new M-Series Next Generation cameras are ideal for long and ultra-long range detection on large vessels. The M-Series have a detection range of three to ten nautical miles, offer radar connectivity for radar tracking and can be integrated in the yacht’s bridge system or as part of the shipboard security network. The latest models also feature gyro- stabilisation so the camera always delivers a steady picture in rough seas. FLIR believe that it won’t be long before a FLIR camera is installed as standard on every yacht on the world.


The outboard industry has been experiencing a steady trend towards higher horsepower while also enjoying continued improvements in key engine attributes such as NVH, fuel efficiency, and reliability. At Mercury, we are focused on continuing to advance our industry leading engine technology but it is the coupling of our engines with our portfolio of intuitive and reliable prop-to-helm solutions to create a connected propulsion eco-system that is providing some of the most exciting, new and richer experiences for boaters. As an example, our Vessel View Mobile App, which connects the consumer to their propulsion system via their smartphone, was launched in the fall of 2016 and we continue to introduce new updates with additional features to enhance the connected eco-system. Additionally, we provide downloadable content enabling VesselView users to download new enhanced joystick features.


Changing lifestyles influence how we want to experience the sea and protecting nature will shape future yacht design. Owner requests or industry regulation will dictate greener vessels. A centralised ‘eco information’ source would benefit owners, designers and yards when making cost or space driven decisions. LNG (liquified natural gas) that is efficient and clean may join solar, wind and hybrid power, once fuelling stations become more frequent. Owners are increasingly looking for ‘alternative’ tried and tested aesthetics… such as the Ulstein bow which claims better seakeeping and efficiency, or the reverse wave piercing bow of the Zumwalt-class destroyer. Creative use of interior volumes could free up the full length of the vessel for private exterior deck use by guests (as on a cruise ship), whilst also providing crew with a better quality of life.
