3 HOT FOOTING


Which is hotter underfoot teak or substitute? Robert Eldridge of Palma based Ocean Refit explains, “Synthetic decks don’t work well here in the Mediterranean as they get too hot in the sun. Some manufacturers have pale colours to


help overcome this, but we’ve found they still get unacceptably hot.” Matthias Reviriego, General Manager at Karinthia feels similarly, commenting, “Genuine teak maintains an acceptable temperature on the surface. I have found some synthetic teak to be much hotter, that in some cases, depending on the colour, it is impossible to walk on without shoes.”


Tomas Gustafsson of Flexiteek 2G disagrees. He says, “When comparing the same colours like for like there is very little difference.” He believes that because Flexiteek 2G is less dense than quality teak it cools underfoot slightly faster.


Luca Zaccagno of Helidecks confirms, “Older style synthetic teak decking made from a mixture of PVC and other materials, was certainly warmer than real wood often by as much as 3 or 4 degrees Celsius.” “But,” he says, “Over the years significant improvements have been made to reduce the problem so much so that the heat transmitting from the Heli-teak is almost similar in heat transmission as is true teak.”


Sacha Roebe says, “There are many different measurements to be taken into account when making this argument.” He says, “Crucial to the temperature of the surface is the colour and surface roughness of the product. A smooth, heavily oiled teak deck is partly hotter than a plastic teak deck. On the other hand, a dark brown plastic teak deck is much warmer than a teak deck. That is why there are plastic teak covers in all colours with white, grey or black joints, so that we can offer the right shade for every application.”


Reinier Waardenburg points out that when decks get hot they can be cooled down using water. When you do this synthetic teak cools faster than does real teak.

However with modern materials and advances in technology this is certainly no longer the case.

Tomas Gustafsson is the CEO of the company that manufactures and distributes Flexiteek 2G, a synthetic teak/wood product produced using sanded PVC. He tells us, “Last year it was used on eight superyacht new builds and is in use aboard over 130 yachts worldwide.” He says his decks offer less maintenance than a teak deck and don’t need to be oiled. He says Flexiteek does not fade or crack and has better non slip qualities that allows for easier maintenance. He adds, “They can be pressure washed, are lighter in weight and can be easily bent and curved in ways that teak can’t.”


Reinier Waardenburg believes synthetic decks offer real advantages. He says, “Here at Easy-Tek our slogan is: Double the lifespan, half the price.” He explains, “The installation takes just a few days and has virtually no impact on the planning of the ship. No
