Service Call buttons are an integral and seamless part of allowing guests to contact crew whilst on board. Morse combines simple integration and minimalistic design

hannel 28 were asked by one of the largest management companies what they could come up with when it came to service call buttons. Further discussions with the management company and crew enabled them to ascertain the good and bad parts of existing devices and methods of internal communication.Existing systems were either too basic or too over-the-top (with price tags to match).


Other contact systems often require extensive infrastructure: lots of repeaters (requiring power) installed into ceilings to get the signal back to the receiver, which would then feed a pager.


Given this traditional reliance on physical infrastructure, hassle free retro fitting would be an important consideration in the solution. The last thing a crew or ETO would want is a major installation headache. Any new system would require minimal physical fitting, so simple it could even be done mid-season.


Smart, connected technology is moving fast within commercial buildings, private residences and, of course, the prestigious yachts Channel 28 frequently deal with. So, after a few months of research and in-house development ‘Morse’ was born, a service call button designed for the connected age.


The first thing you’ll notice about the Morse service call button is it’s beautiful design. Whether you go for a brushed, polished, anodised or gloss finish, you’ll have an elegant yet understated button that will blend seamlessly with its surroundings. Owners or guests won’t feel it is encroaching if they position it on the table during meals. And because it is ‘just a button’, it can’t spoil the conversation, unlike a telephone based system might do.


Morse works by connecting to your ship’s Wi-Fi, and easily integrates with your AV controls such as Crestron or AMX. It can also be hooked up to a radio system such

as the Channel 28 cState system. There’s no fussy install that you may be familiar with if you are used to older systems.


So, it looks good and is easy to set up, but what is it like to use? Users will find it a revelation. Press the Morse button and a discreet coloured band will light up to show connection. This will change to green to inform them that they are being responded to. It offers haptic feedback too, informing the user of progress with a gentle buzz.


It may be small and minimalist, but it is packed with cutting edge technology, plus it’s totally waterproof. The latest low energy Wi-Fi chip sets, LED lighting and a long-life battery and Morse also comes with a matching iPhone app for client use. It is smart enough to go into sleep mode when not in use, and can be powered down if you know it will be idle for an extended period. This means the battery will typically last for two years.


Channel 28 was formed in 2012 by two experienced engineers to develop well engineered products for the marine sector
