BUILDERS MERCHANTS: A-Z R ROBERT PRICE & SONS


ROBERT PRICE WAS established in Abergavenny in 1847, originally as a stone masons and later specialising in monumental works. The main office was situated at Lion Works, Lion Street, Abergavenny where Robert Price lived with his family in the adjoining cottage, with his horses and drays kept at Park Road.


The Ebbw Vale branch was opened in about 1870. Additional small monumental works at Brynmawr, Crickhowell and Blaenavon were opened by the turn of the century. Robert Price, grandson of the founder, canvassed local builders to establish support for his idea of opening a builders’ merchant. With an oral “promise” not to compete as a builder, he started to stock and supply materials to tradesmen in Abergavenny and

Robert Price is now the largest independent builders’ merchants in South East Wales, with 22 branches across the region. The branches include 15 builders’ merchants, 2 timber merchants, 3 roofing merchants, a specialist insulation branch and an agricultural division.


Showrooms. Within the group there are also branches of Jewson Civils and Frazer, specialising in civils, utilities and infrastructure solutions.

In 2021, it welcomed Aberdare- based building and roofing suppliers, Builders’ Bitz, into its group.Builders’ Bitz will become the 23rd branch in the Robert Price group, continuing to trade under the Builders’ Bitz banner, but with some new benefits for the customer. such as access to Robert Price’s specialist services and an increased stock range.
