Bradfords Building Supplies is the oldest builders’ merchants in the UK, celebrating its 250th birthday in 2020.
The company operates from 46 branches across the south west, covering product sectors from heavyside through timber, decoraitng and tools to bathrooms, kitchens and landscaping.
In 2019, the group sold its importing and timber distribution business Snows Timber, and refocused the rest of its business on the merchant market. David Young, CEO said at the time: “We are committed to ensuring Bradfords as the most trusted partner of choice in building materials in the South West. We are expanding our network, refurbishing our branches and renewing our fleet. With our experienced team we will take Bradfords into its next phase of development.”
The board’s long-term plan is to increase the branch operation in the South West to 60 branches. In 2019, it acquired Penzance based Solo Building Supplies, relocated the Sherborne Branch in Dorset to a purpose-built site and a new branch opened in Helston in January 2020.
In 2021, the company opened a new branch in Glastonbury,
18
which includes one of the first Sustainable Home Centre showrooms in the UK. The in-branch Sustainable Home Centre has been created in collaboration with Renewable Equipment Solutions (RES), a local Somerset provider of sustainable energy efficient heating and ventilation solutions. From live heat pumps and underfloor heating, to solar panels and vehicle charging points, the centre will showcase sustainable solutions for domestic dwellings available on the market. Young said: “The Glastonbury branch is centrally located across our sites on the M5 corridor. Not only is it an ideal building to effectively accommodate everything you’d expect from a builder’s merchants, it also provides us the opportunity to launch this new offering. “This new Sustainable Home Centre is Bradfords putting a stake in the ground for the industry. We want to reach out to local builders, installers and architects in the community to encourage them to come and talk to us about sustainable construction solutions and the
benefits they offer in creating a more sustainable future for everyone.”
The Sustainable Home Centre will also provide product training
for installers across the region and host CPD courses for architects to keep up to date with the latest and greatest in ultra-efficient technologies.
