60% of the groups’ products are made in factories using recycled or surface rainwater Floren’s production methods and processes enhance the brand’s ethos and endorse its bespoke service. Floren’s bricks are made using Campine Quaternary clays from its own pits located in close proximity to the factory. This clay imparts a high compressive strength and low water absorption rate, giving its products excellent technical properties. Alongside producing a brick of technical excellence Floren has sustainability at the forefront of its production processes. Surrounding the entire site, Floren creates a vast natural buffer 1100m long of 20m2 depth and at least 4m height to minimise transfer of noise and better light to the surrounding site whilst also increasing the reintroduction of habitats and wildlife. On top of this it has returned many former quarries into thriving fishing lakes and nature reserves to allow nature to flourish. The site itself has been furnished with 2500m2(1152) of solar panels that deliver a large percentage of its electricity with 376 Kilowatt peak production, whilst consideration has also been given to water consumption with further investment in rainwater harvesting, meaning there is no use of potable water in production and sources are only from recycled water sources.

Fossil fuels

CEMEX has announced that it is investing US$25 million in a new system to replace fossil fuels at its Rugby cement plant in the United Kingdom (“UK”), as part of its “Future in Action” program to achieve carbon neutrality. The new system, which incorporates the use of green hydrogen in the production process, is expected to be fully operational in June 2021. Once completed, it will have the capability to operate at 100% with alternative fuels.

This important investment is designed to reduce the site’s consumption of fossil fuels. CEMEX is one of the largest contributors to the circular economy and a leader in using alternative fuels with over 60% use across its European operations, significantly higher than the industry average. In the UK, CEMEX also obtains 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.

The project, which is part of a US$100 million investment program in the UK that has contributed towards reducing CO2 emissions from European operations by 35% from 1990 levels, 10 years ahead of its global business target, is instrumental towards reaching its commitment of at least 55% CO2 reduction in European operations by 2030, in line with the European Commission´s aspiration for all its member states.

“We believe that this very significant investment in this upgraded facility supports CEMEX’s position to minimise the use of fossil fuels for both environmental and economic reasons. It will enable the Rugby plant to consistently operate with up to 100% alternative fuels, which will contribute to our climate action targets,” said Sergio Menendez, President of CEMEX Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia.

Renewable sources

Ibstock plc has become the first building products manufacturer in the UK to procure 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.

This milestone announcement enables Ibstock to make significant steps in reaching its Sustainability Roadmap target of a 15% reduction in CO2 per tonne of production by 2025, and accelerates its Net-Zero Carbon journey.

This switch to renewable electricity is the latest in a series of decarbonisation projects Ibstock has invested in, including the completion of a solar park – the first of its kind in the brick industry – at the Group’s Leicestershire head office.
