IN DECEMBER 2022, the Danish Stark group bought the UK building materials distribution businesses of Paris-based conglomerate Saint Gobain. The sale comprised over 600 dedicated builders’ merchant branches and distribution centres.


On 1 March 2023, STARK UK was officially established. STARK Building Materials UK now comprises 14 brands, including: Jewson, along with Gibbs & Dandy, JP Corry, George Boyd, Matthew Charlton, specialist brands Minster and Jewson Civils Frazer, and major timber importer and distributor, International Timber.

Founded in 1874 by James Thomas Sydenham in Poole, Dorset, Sydenhams was acquired in the 1920s by John Sherborne and the business has remained in the family for over 100 years, now in the hands of our Joint Chairmen and brothers; James & Charles Sherborne.


In 2023 it moved the Guernsey branch to a larger site, opening for business in September, increasing the offering to customers on the island. It also extended Timber Engineering capability by expanding the Wickham site with a new factory and state of the art truss press.

Carter confirmed STARK UK’s Trust in Better strategy is well underway. He said: “This has been a fast-paced year with an ambitious agenda. able to provide the high-quality products, services and expertise that the UK’s professional tradespeople need and want, so they can look after their own customers and grow their businesses successfully. We’re proud to partner the trades, and that’s why it’s important that we continue with our plans, and I’ve been delighted with the dedication and positive energy I’m seeing from colleagues, right across the business.” While the market conditions continue to be challenging for the industry as a whole, Carter says that STARK UK remains committed to ‘taking a bigger slice of the smaller pie’, following the lead of STARK Group to become the number one builders’
