EH Smith was founded in 1922, by Mr E.H. Smith, transforming a business supplying jute sacks and bulk bagged cement from a railway sidings in Small Heath, Birmingham, into a builder’s merchants operation.


Over the ensuring 100 years it has expanded to the point where it currently has 11 branches, the latest of which, in Coventry, was acquired in 2022. An architectural design centre was opened in Clerkenwell, London, in 2020, and a kitchen and bathroom showroom opened in Henley-in- Arden in 2021.

Covers have supplied a diverse range of timber and building materials to a wide spectrum of customers for over 175 years. With 16 branch locations spread across the South of England, it is well situated to supply timber and building materials from our extensive range of over 25,000 product lines. Importing timber directly from the source, it has timber mills equipped with the fast and flexible wood working machinery to produce quality joinery and mouldings. Stress grading, house lot packages and preservative treatments are also available on request.

Carvers operates from two 10- acre sites. The Littles Lane site in Wolverhampton features a fully-stocked builders merchant branch, a kitchen and bathroom showroom, a cooker centre, Carvers DIY showroom, a landscaping centre and a drivethrough warehouse for building materials.


The Neachells Lane site in Wednesfield is a specialist timber facility. Carvers run a transport fleet of over 30 delivery vehicles and operate a wide range to suit most access restrictions and product requirements, including bulk site deliveries.
