April 2024 A supplement to builders merchants journal

LEAGUE TABLES Operating margin growth

Not quite such a rosy picture here. Yes, the overwhelming majority of merchants were profitable at operating level in their latest financial period – but only a quarter of the companies listed here managed to improve their operating margins. Conclusion: there are operating cost pressures in the business, and revenues and gross margins aren’t keeping pace with them. But it’s worth stressing that although three-quarters of the 57 merchant firms listed in Trailblazers saw operating margins decline, 54 of them were still in the black. A loss of margin isn’t the same as losing money.

Sales per head:

If anything, this table serves as a reminder that there’s more than one kind of merchant. Is it valid to compare a decorating specialist with a heavyside merchant? Or a civils business with a kitchen and bathroom business? Of course not. But the table provides the industry with a benchmark: this is the level of staff productivity achieved by the top 50-odd businesses in the market. And for the thousands of smaller merchants businesses up and down the country: you know which of these companies are your direct competitors, and thanks to Trailblazers, you can check to see how your staff compare with theirs. No, that’s fine. You’re welcome.
