April 2024 A supplement to builders merchants journal BMJ Index
The BMJ Index is intended to give a snapshot of a company’s overall competitiveness in its market, and is calculated by multiplying what we regard as three key ratios: sales growth, stockturn, and operating margin.
So a year-on-year sales decline, or a year of operating loss, automatically creates a negative score. Huws Gray tops this year’s chart with a record- breaking Index score of 5,137, thanks to the peculiar combination of a 215% increase in sales, coupled with a rise in stock valuation of only 5%.
No other merchanting business comes close. But several of the companies immediately below Huws Gray have achieved spectacular Index scores without the benefit of acquisitions: Berry, Robert Price, Markovitz and so on. And look at the middle ground, excluding the top 10 and bottom 10 in the table, and the range of Index scores shows a very healthy average score of nearly 200. Merchanting is still a good business to be in.
