LEAGUE TABLES Staff
Another powerful reminder of TP’s dominant position in the market: a total of 67,375 people worked for the UK’s top 55 merchants in the latest financial reporting period – and very nearly 30% of them worked for Travis Perkins. In fact TP employed more people than Stark (Jewson), Huws Gray, and Wolseley combined. But here’s a sign of the times – combine the staff headcounts of IBMG, National Timber Group, Grant & Stone, Rawle Gammon & Baker, Parker Building Supplies and Paintwell, and it adds up to 4,489 people working indirectly for Turbo Acquisitions 10 Topco Ltd, controlled by Cairngorm Capital Partners. That’s nearly as many as are employed by Wolseley UK, and many more than are there are working for Highbourne. The speed with which Cairngorm has built a powerful position in the merchant market – and the size of that position – is quite staggering.
Stockturn
This table has always shown that not all builders merchants run on the same model, hence there is a vast difference between the highest and lowest stockturn figures achieved. But we thought it worth exploring how today’s post-pandemic stockturn figures compare with those from 10 years ago. The answer: not at all well. We identified 36 companies from this list for which we had comparable 2015 data, and compared the latest figures with the earlier ones. Of those 36 companies, only eight recorded a higher stockturn figure in the 2024 Trail Blazers than in 2015. One company matched its performance from 10 years ago. The remaining 27 merchant businesses all saw stockturn rates decline – in some cases quite alarmingly so. Why this has happened isn’t clear; possibly it’s a result of panic buying by merchants during the pandemic, when supply chains were disrupted and there was a tendency to buy whatever you could get. Has that resulted in merchants now holding more stock– possibly far more stock – than they actually need? At all events, it will be interesting to see how long it takes the industry to get back to something like 2015’s levels of efficient stock management.
