Founded in 1990 from a single branch in Gaerwen, Anglesey, Huws Gray has rapidly expanded over the past 30+ years through a mixture of organic growth and acquisitions, doubling in turnover every five years. The Group is now the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant, supplying building materials to trade and DIY customers from over 400 locations across Wales, England and Scotland. The Group is a premium merchant and distributor of a broad range of building materials and products, including being a leading timber merchant and importer to corporate, trade and retail customers and has been backed by private equity firm Blackstone since 2021. The Group made its biggest ever acquisition in 2021 when it acquired the tradtional merchanting businesses of the Grafton Group. Since then, the focus has been on integration and consolidation, with strageic investment where appropriate. The group’s specialist division Civils & Lintels, has completed a major investment programme to increase its capacity and enhance its service levels to the UK residential sector. More than £m has been spent to create four regional distribution hubs for the lintels division of the company.

A new facility has been set up at Kirkby-in-Ashfield and a further site in Erith converted solely to a Lintels platform alongside further investment in sites at Bolton and Westbury in Wiltshire with all sites offering an impressive range of stock from all key manufacturers. Earlier in 2023, the company opened a new branch in Exeter. The site now has broader and deeper stock levels and increased delivery capacity.
Huws Gray ended 2023 with the announcement that, after 14 years with the business, CEO Ian Northen would step down from February 1 2024. Northern, who joined Huws Gray with the takeover of East Anglian builders merchant group Ridgeons, was succeeded by Daksh Gupta, who had been Group CEO of Marshall Motor Holdings plc for 15 years. Terry Owen, founder and chairman said at the time: “I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Board to thank Ian for the significant role he has played in the Huws Gray story, the Board wishes him the very best for the future. We are delighted to welcome Daksh as our new chief executive. He is a dynamic, values-driven business leader who has a diverse background of experiences and an outstanding track record.”
