Te United City of Yorkville had 409 new housing starts in 2021, a 29 per cent

increase over 2020, making it the fastest growing community in Kendall County for a second year in a row, according to City Administrator Bart Olson, who reported on the City’s economics at an April Chamber luncheon. In addition to housing starts, the City is having an influx of new restaurants,

including a Chipotle Mexican Grill to open in the fall at 444 E. Veterans Pkwy.., Dakotas opening in the former Butcher Block 360 at 227 Heustis St., and a Major Treat restaurant in the former Milhurst Ale House at 2075 Marketview Dr. A Foxes Den Meadery and an Iconic Coffee Shop will be opening this summer in the Dixon Building in downtown Yorkville at 101 S. Bridge St. Te Dixon building is undergoing a major remodeling. “Tere’s definitely a real interest in developing in the downtown,” Mayor John

Purcell says. “No less than half a dozen people are interested.” To help encourage the development, Mayor Purcell added, the City has applied for a $3 million grant administered by the state, and will add another $1 million to go toward burying utility lines, replacing water mains, and remediating contaminated soil in the east alley area off Van Emmon Street. Te mayor says the state also will be working this year on repairing erosion to the island in the Fox River so Yorkville can retain its White Water Park. Te City also is working to get an easement along the south side of the Fox River. “Downtown is important to us,” Mayor Purcell says, “but you can’t just focus on

one thing. We are doing millions of dollars of road improvements, public works projects, fixing up the new City Hall building. You need to do multiple things at once.”
