BUSINESSES Fox Valley Sandblasting and Powder Coatings Need an antique bed frame or old bicycle
restored? Fox Valley Sandblasting & Powder Coatings is the place to call. “A third of our business is from
homeowners and hobbiests,” says Jim Schwebke, president of Fox Valley Sandblasting & Powder Coating, 207 Beaver St., Yorkville. “We do a lot of antiques. If you can think of something that’s metal, in your house right now, you could sandblast it and refinish it.” Old sewing machines, boat anchors, lawn
furniture, claw-footed antique bathtubs are just a few of the items that have been refinished at Fox Valley Sandblasting. Jim says car buffs and motorcyclists also bring him work. “We do a lot of industrial stuff, like pumps,
valves, fabrications. We also do smokers - maybe once a month. A lot of people are into smoking foods. We do work for some of these sculpture artists. We do work all over the Fox Valley. We have big trucks to bring items here.” Jim, who worked as a mechanic through high school and into his early 20s, began his sandblasting business in 1987 and moved to Yorkville in 1994.
“I bought some sandblasting equipment from a
friend of the family,” he recalls. “I first rented a two-car bay in Oswego, then moved to an old black building in Bristol behind Bristol Tap.” He said seven or eight years ago he bought a
5,000-square-foot building at 1210 Badger St., than a year and a half ago he bought his current location at 207 Beaver St. and vacated his other location. He now has 34,000-square-feet of work space and 22 employees,

including his two sons Steven and Michael. “I always had one or two employees, but as we got
more ingrained and our client base grew, we added more equipment, more tow trucks, and more employees.” He says that typically it will take about a week and a
half turn-around time for homeowners’ projects. In addition to the sandblasting, his staff can apply a powder coating, which he says they have in a litany of colors. “When you strip all the coating off, this is applied
electrostatically, like spray painting,” Jim explained. “It’s extremely durable. It goes on dry. It’s better than spray paint.”
