Fox Valley Community Services

Fox Valley Community Services (FVCS) is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary of

serving seniors in four counties, Kendall, DeKalb, Kane and LaSalle, with special events held throughout the year. “We are doing a large volunteer party in April, because

volunteers are such a large part of our celebration,” says Executive Director Suzanne Kinsey. “We have a special event, a big picnic, planned for July 23 outside our building (located at 1406 Suydam Rd. in Sandwich) with a big tent, music and entertainment.”

that they are one of the oldest community centers in the state of Illinois. In existence since 1972, FVCS’s stated mission is to work to help seniors remain in their own homes; to improve and enrich vital, independent living, enhance dignity and self- respect; and to encourage seniors to participate in community life. It currently serves about 1,500 seniors, offering an adult day care center; classes in such things as tap dancing, movies, arts and crafts; intergenerational programs partnering with the Sandwich School District; and even trips to such places as Maine, and day trips to Cubs games. “We have made it through thick and thin and we are still growing,” Kindsey said. “Tis year we are doing some improvements to our building, putting in a patio at the rear of the building, painting and putting in new flooring to meet the needs of seniors for the next generation.” Although not as many seniors were able to attend

in-house events during the Covid pandemic, Kinsey said that FVCS did more Zoom programs and offered parking lot activities. Her staff, she said, is incredibly talented and people in the area have been very resilitent. “We are finding that more and more people are

returning every day,” she said. “It’s very important to have that physical connection.” In the Kendall County area, seniors who need home

care can contact Yorkville’s Beecher Center, 630-542-6994, for help. Te Beecher Center is one of FVCS’s best resources, Kindsey said. Another resource for Yorkville residents - the Voluntary Action Committee, 815-787-6212 - can provide transportation to the Sandwich center if a senior doesn’t drive a car. It also can take people grocery shopping, and to doctor’s appointments. Te Sandwich Center has a great room that is open for use by local community organizations like Boy Scouts, Chambers of Commerce and educational foundation, and also can be rented for private event use. “We are always looking for new ideas,” Kinsey said.
