Yorkville Area Chamber of Commerce
New Beginnings Emerging from the pandemic
shutdowns can be likened to springtime. Akin to the earth’s awakening from winter, we now welcome the shedding of layers and protective gear to step out to a world re-opening. We go forth feeling loss where the season’s harshness took its toll. But we are reminded of the promise of sunnier days. It has felt good to see businesses
reopen after the shutdowns. We are sad for those that didn’t survive and know it means a difficult new beginning for those owners and employees. Meanwhile like a fresh spring, we are welcoming newly opened businesses and excited for their growth. Te cycle continues.
Tis fall, I too will begin a new

chapter as I step away from my role at the Chamber. Te ebb and flow of cycles is clear upon reflection of my time here. When I arrived in 2007 a boom economy brought unprecedented growth, forever changing the landscape of this quiet community. Economic downturns that soon followed taught me the value of a business community that pulls together. Tat was further emphasized during the pandemic as our Chamber worked in unity with the city, police, schools, and county, challenging ourselves to do all that was possible to keep our community strong. It has been my privilege to be part of this. During these fifteen years I’ve had the good fortune to work with some amazing individuals, business owners, their staff, peers, and community leaders who have been an inspiration. Space doesn’t allow me to embellish, but among them is the Chamber’s new executive director. Renee Tortorella came to the Yorkville Chamber as a new member several years ago and as we like to say, did everything right. She quickly jumped in by attending events, joining committees, and volunteering. Before long she was an ambassador, leads group facilitator, Green Connect co-facilitator, promotions committee participant, and showed up to volunteer. When the pandemic shut down her business, an opportunity opened for her to join the Yorkville Chamber staff. Working with Renee as a member, volunteer, and employee, I have seen her strong skillset, passion, and dedication to supporting local businesses. We will continue working together through a transition period, and I leave knowing that the business community has gained an outstanding new leader who will do great things. In closing, I strongly believe in the mission of this Chamber and look

forward to watching its growth from the sidelines. New beginnings don’t always mean endings. I’ve grown to love this community and look forward to staying in touch as a friend or popping in as a customer. It’s been a pleasure and privilege to serve this business community. My appreciation and deepest gratitude to all who have been supportive and valued partners, working together for a common good. xxx
