#IBC2023 THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF IP EXPLORED
Live video distribution-over-IP specialist Zixi is focusing on the economic advantages of IP delivery for its panel as part of this year’s IBC Showcase Theatre. The rising effi ciencies of live IP video distribution has been a recurring theme of Zixi presentations in recent years, and so this year’s event will fi nd CEO Gordon Brooks chairing a panel of industry experts discussing the economic advantages of IP delivery.
New methods of content acquisition, new business models and new opportunities to reduce cost and generate revenue are among the aspects to be explored by the panelists. John Wastcoat, SVP Strategic Alliances and Marketing at Zixi, reveals: “Zixi customers and partners – including Group Director of Content, Broadcast & Platforms at Sky, David Travis – will discuss their deployments of Zixi [live
video over IP technology], which is the most sustainable and cost- effective solution available. The Zixi Protocol, along with the SDVP [Software-Defi ned Video Platform], on average require 50% less bandwidth and 60% less compute [than other available solutions], while being 10 times more port effi cient and saving 50% of egress costs. Sustainability initiatives are important to the industry, but especially when it is fi nancially attractive to adopt.” Away from the Showcase Theatre, Zixi is exhibiting on stand 5.A85. Here it is highlighting both new and existing capabilities of the SDVP, including the increased effi ciency and processing capacity of v17 of Broadcaster, a universal live media gateway that ensures high performance and highly resilient connections between sources and destinations. Notable features of Broadcaster v17 include improved processing
capacity requiring 80% less compute; up to 50% savings in egress costs for the same stream on other platforms; support for deployments on ARM-based instances with signifi cant savings on compute costs and reduced carbon footprint; and dramatically improved resource utilisation and updated architecture, yielding up to 200% throughout increase to 1Gbps per core.
Zixi is also collaborating with
fi ve members of the Zixi Enabled Network in the Zixi Partner Village, including Videon, Red5 Pro and Streann Media. Wastcoat explains: “The Zixi Enabled Network is an ecosystem/ network of 1000+ media companies and 400+ technology partners globally exchanging live video, creating powerful acceleration of new content acquisition, new business models, new opportunities to reduce cost, and new opportunities to generate revenue.”

Taking place across two stages in Hall 5, the Content Everywhere programme is today covering everything from greener streaming and the metaverse to sport streaming. Stage 1, sponsored by LTN, begins at 10:45 with a panel discussion exploring streaming’s sustainability crisis. Frank Miller, Varnish Software; Mark Donnigan, VP, Marketing, NETINT Technologies; and Johan Bolin, Chief Product and Technology Offi cer at Agile Content, will share their thoughts on how the crisis can be addressed while continuing to deliver new and exciting next-gen experiences. Mware, will then explore ‘The Road Map to Next Generation Video Experiences’, brainstorming the scalable, cost effective and engaging OTT video services of the future. The fi nal panel of the day on Stage 1 will debate the huge issue of viewer retention. In ‘Churn Management and User Retention in a Mixed Monetisation Market’, Martin Prins of MediaDistillery and Gilles Domartini, CEO and Founder at Cleeng, will explore the tools and techniques available to video service providers to enhance
audience engagement, counter churn and improve retention. Over on Stage 2, sponsored by Tencent Cloud, and live events are very much in focus today. NativeWaves kicks things off with insight into how broadcasters, streaming services and sports leagues can use a single production using low-latency streaming and in-venue 5G installations to deliver personalised immersive experiences in the home, on the go and in the stadium.
MediaHub is then set to unveil its Sports module focused on football, the fi rst of many theme modules designed to elevate the TV experience, before ‘High Performance Sporting Case Studies’ looks at three case studies showing how streaming technologies are augmenting coverage of top-tier sports, including cricket’s Indian Premier League and the Men’s FIFA World Cup 2022.
The focus then turns to AI, with a panel discussing the opportunities and limitations of generative AI in media and entertainment at 16:00. Mark Brincat, Group CTO at Intive, will lead the fi nal session of the day, entitled ‘AI Will Transform the Streaming Industry: Are you ready?’. Leveraging real- life case studies, the presentation will look at opportunities seen across industries while exploring their applicability in the media sector. Some of the techniques and best practices to make media organisations better prepared will also be highlighted. Other sessions across the two stages will cover Android TV, FAST and more.
