Joanna Simon is a wine writer, speaker, and author long associated with The Sunday Times, where she picked up various awards during her 22-year tenure. She writes for several titles; publishes wine recommendations, fine-wine
blogs, recipes, and restaurant reviews at
joannasimon.com; is a judge for Decanter World Wine Awards; and is a co-founder of The Wine Gang (
thewinegang.com). Her books, published worldwide, include Discovering Wine, Wine with Food, Wine: An Introduction, The Sunday Times Book of Wine, and Harrods Book of Fine Wine. In the distant past, she presented the BBC Radio 4 series The Bottle Uncorked and edited both Wine and Wine & Spirit magazines.
Dr Erik Skovenborg is a Danish specialist in family medicine who has developed a deep interest in the health implications of drinking, allowing him to become a member of the Social, Scientific, and Medical Council of AIM (Alcohol in Moderation) in 1992; a founder member of the Scandinavian Medical Alcohol Board in 1994; and a member of the International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research in 2010. For many years, Erik has lectured extensively on alcohol and health to medical professionals, as well as to the general public. His published work includes In Vino Sanitas (1990), Lead in Wine throughout the Ages (1994), Wine and Health: Myths and Facts (2000), Women and Wine: From Useful Facts to Healthy Enjoyment (2014), and A Toast to Old Age: A Happy Life as a Senior with Beer and Wine (2017).
Walter Speller obtained a degree in Art History and Social Sciences in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 1990s, then moved to Berlin, where he worked as a sommelier for 13 years. Before moving to London in 2003, he worked two vintages at Château Haut-Bages-Libéral in Pauillac. In London, he worked first as a sommelier, then as a wine buyer and an export consultant. Since 2008, he has been the Italian specialist (now editor of Italy) at
jancisrobinson.com, where he reports on Italian wine, drawing in cultural, historic, and socioeconomic aspects. A contributing editor to The World Atlas of Wine and The Oxford Companion to Wine, Walter is obsessed with rare local grapes and denominations on the brink of extinction. Together with Jane Hunt MW, he is the organizer of the generic Italian trade events Nebbiolo Day and Sangiovese Reset.
Tom Stevenson has been writing about wine— more particularly Champagne and Alsace—for more than 45 years. He is the author of 23 books and the winner of 32 literary awards, including The Wine Literary Award, America’s only lifetime-achievement award for wine writers.
In 1998, his Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne & Sparkling Wine (recently republished in its fourth edition in collaboration with Essi Avellan MW) made history by being the only wine book to warrant a leader in a national newspaper (The Guardian) when it published a 17th-century document proving beyond doubt that the English used a second fermentation to convert still wine into sparkling at least six years before Dom Pérignon set foot in the Abbey of Hautvillers. In addition to his own books, Tom also conceived the acclaimed Wine Report, and in 2014 he created the annual Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships.
Stuart Walton has been writing on wine and food, as well as aspects of cultural history, since 1991, having been wine writer at The Observer, The European, BBC magazines, and Food and Travel. His World
Encyclopedia of Wine was fully revised and updated in 2018, and he is also the author of You Heard It through the Grapevine (2001), Out of It: A Cultural History of Intoxication (2001), and Humanity: An Emotional History (2004). His latest theoretical work is In the Realm of the Senses: A Materialist Theory of Seeing and Feeling (2016), and he published his first novel, The First Day in Paradise, in 2016. He has been a senior contributing writer on Britain’s Good Food Guide since 1994 and is a former chairman of the Circle of Wine Writers.
David Williams graduated with a degree in philosophy from Sussex University, then spent a couple of years wandering the world as a freelance journalist, writing about music and culture for magazines including The Face and Arena. On returning to England, he wangled a job at the British wine-trade magazine Harpers. His years there saw him visiting and writing about the world’s major wine regions, before moving on to become editor of Wine & Spirit. A former member of The Wine Gang, David now combines his deputy editorship of The World of Fine Wine with his role as wine correspondent of The Observer. He also writes about wine and the wine industry for a variety of other publications.
Simon Woolf is an award-winning English wine and drinks writer, currently clinging to mainland Europe in Amsterdam. He is a well-known commentator and expert on the developing natural-wine niche. He is the author of Amber Revolution (2018), the world’s first history of orange wines, which won the Domaine Faiveley Wine Book of the Year at the 2019 Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards, and he is the coauthor, with Ryan Opaz, of Foot Trodden:
Jon Wyand is a photographer who has specialized in wine for more than 40 years. Best known for his photographs of Burgundy, he has expanded into most of the major wine regions, and his work appears regularly in The World of Fine Wine. His two most recent books are Une Année en Corton: Rencontres en Haut Lieu and 4 Saisons en Côte Chalonnaise: Au Hasard des Rencontres. Jon has won the Louis Roederer Artistry of Wine award four times and has been Errázuriz Wine Photographer of the Year twice.
