Ancillary Products And Services Today it is common for self-storage facilities to sell boxes, locks, and other moving supplies. They may also rent moving trucks, dollies, and handcarts.

As seen in Chart 6.10, slightly more than 28 percent of

the customers surveyed reported that they rented a moving truck from the facility. In addition, 15.8 percent rented dollies or carts. Nearly 29 percent purchased boxes, tape, or other moving supplies from the facility.

Table 6.6 looks the rental items

and purchases by generation. Mil- lennials ranked highest among all generations, purchasing more moving supplies and renting more moving trucks, carts, and dollies than any of the other generations. More than 39 percent of surveyed millennials rented moving trucks. In addition, 24.5 percent rented dollies and carts from the facility in order to facilitate the move. More- over, 35.3 percent of this age group purchased boxes, tape, or moving supplies.

Business customers even rented dollies and

carts more than millennials (29.2 percent vs. 24.5 percent).

percent of the Greatest Generation

On the opposite end of the spectrum, only 6.9 rented mov-

ing trucks; this is a smaller percentage than any other generation. Likewise, only 1.6 percent of this genera- tion rented dollies or carts for moving, while 22.2 per- cent purchased boxes, tape, and other moving supplies. It could very well be that this oldest generation re- lies on help from their adult children to make a move into storage. Another possi- bility is that this generation may opt to hire moving professionals.

Source: 2017 Self Storage Demand Study (SSA) Business customers tend to be very different from gen-

erational customers, as seen in Chart 6.11 on the following page. These customers rented moving trucks from the facil- ity more than any of the non-business tenants by generation (nearly 44 percent). Business customers even rented dollies and carts more than millennials (29.2 percent vs. 24.5 per- cent). Moreover, nearly 45 percent of business customers surveyed reported that they purchased boxes, tape, and oth- er moving supplies from the facility—again more than any non-business customer age group.
