facility may have an abundance of 5-by-5 units. Conversely, a facility that caters to business customers may have larger units to rent.

Chart 6.3 shows the average unit size rented by custom- ers. Clearly, 10-by-10 units were the most desirable among

22.4 percent of the customers surveyed, while slightly less (22.2 percent) prefered 5-by-10 units.

The 5-by-5 units were preferred by 15.3 percent of the

customers surveyed; 14.7 percent rented 10-by-20 units. The 10-by-15 units were chosen by 13.4 percent of customers, and 10-by-30 or larger units were the least rented at 12 percent.

Table 6.2 breaks down unit size by generation. The

5-by-5 units are most often rented by millennials (26.5 percent). The next favorite size for this generation was 10-by-10 units (20.2 percent), which is slightly less than the customer average, as seen in Chart 6.3. While 18.7 percent rented 5-by-10 units, only 13.2 per- cent rented 10-by-20s and 12.7 rented 10-by-15 units.

Of all age groups, the Greatest Generation most

often rented 10-by-10 units (29.5 percent); this was also the highest percentage for any unit size. While

22.7 percent of this generation rented 10-by-15 units, slightly less than 12 percent rented 10-by-30s. Another 11 percent chose 10-by-20s, and only 7.5 percent rented 5-by-5 units.

Clearly, 10-by-10 units were the most desirable among 22.4 percent of the

customers surveyed, while slightly less (22.2 percent) prefered 5-by-10 units.

The majority of baby boomers reported that they rented

10-by-10 and 5-by-10 units (23.4 and 21.1 percent, respec- tively). This generation rented 10-by-30 units 9.7 percent of the time, less than any other generation except millennials.

Similar to baby boomers, Gen-X tenants rented 5-by-10

and 10-by-10 units more than any other sizes (27.6 percent and 21.5 percent, respectively). The big difference for this generation is that 10-by-15 units were the least rented (6.5 percent of the time). Another big difference is seen for 10- by-30 or larger units; Gen-X renters chose this size unit 17.1 percent of the time—a percentage that is more than five per- cent higher than any other age group.

Chart 6.4 looks at the unit sizes preferred by business cus-

tomers. Unlike other customer types, 34 percent rented units that are 10-by-30 or larger as their primary unit. Remember, as seen in Section 5, more than half of all business customers rent more than one unit.

The next preferred unit size for business customers was

10-by-10s (19 percent), followed by 5-by-5s (14 percent), and 10-by-20s (13 percent). The unit size least rented by business
