Industry Profile • Section 1

variances in the collection methods, accounts for the differ- ences in the facility count.

The Industry Profile Using the methodology above, Tables 1.1 and 1.2 indicate that there are approximately 44,149 facilities nationwide, with an average of 52,352 rentable square feet. This equates to an industry total of 2,311,288,448 rentable square feet.

The data indicates that Texas continues to be the state

with the largest number of self-storage facilities (4,475). On the opposite end of the spectrum, Rhode Island once again has the least number of facilities (86) as well as the least rent- able square feet per person.

Table 1.2 reports the number of facilities by state along

with rentable square footage of storage, the population, and the square feet of storage space per person.

As explained in the Methodology section, Union Realtime has

leveraged both public and private data sources to determine the entire universe of self-storage facilities in the U.S. and Canada.

By state, California and Florida follow Texas with 4,057

and 2,758 facilities respectively. In terms of rentable square footage, Texas holds the lead with 234,275,200 rentable square feet, followed by California with 212,392,064 and Flor- ida with 144,386,816 rentable square feet of storage in the marketplace.

Again, as stated in the Methodology section, supply

data is very subjective. As such, there will always be differ- ences from one source to another, as seen when comparing Tables 1.2 and 1.3. For the numbers this year, our goal with NKF was to focus only on facilities where the major source of revenue from the address was the rental of self-storage units. If a facility had a majority of boat/RV storage or auto storage, it was eliminated from our count. For example, if it was a small number of units (100 or less) behind a strip center with a laundromat and convenience store on the front of the property, the self-storage facility was eliminated. In addition, we also tried to identify sub-categories that predominately contained smaller facilities of less than 20,000 square feet.

The Union Realtime data in Table 1.3 averages both public

and private data sources to determine the universe of self- storage facilities in the U.S. From those data sources, it has
