Renting To Business Customers • Section 5 Exterior units with no drive-up parking (aisle only) are
preferred by 15 percent of the business customers sur- veyed; the remaining 14 percent state that an indoor unit with drive-up access is their preferred choice.
As previously mentioned, commercial or business ten-
ants are often sought out because they tend to rent their units for longer periods of time than other customer types. This is evidenced in Chart 5.5. On average, 48 percent of all business tenants reported renting their units for two years or longer. Approximately 23 percent rented for between one and two years, and 29 percent report that they rented their commercial unit for less than one year.
The most popular preferred method of paying for unit rentals by commercial or
business customers are check (28.3 percent), automatic
recurring credit card payment (22.5 percent), and credit card or debit card paid by calling or visiting the office (21.1 percent).
Rental Rates And Payments Monthly rental rates reported by customers appear in Chart 5.6. The majority, approximately 25.3 percent, report paying between $175 and $299.99 for their self- storage unit. Slightly fewer (21.6 percent) reported paying higher
rates of $300 or more per month. This
coincides with the fact that 34 percent of business customers reported renting units that are 10-by-30 or larger.
Approximately 13 percent of surveyed business custom-
ers reported paying between $125 and $174.99 per month for their units. Slightly less (12.1 and 12 percent) reported paying between $100 and $124.99 or $75 to $99.99 respec- tively. Only 9.4 percent of business customers reported paying between $50 and $74.99 for their units, while 6.4 percent pay less than $50. See Charts 5.7 and 5.8 on the following pages.

(22.5 percent), and credit card or debit card paid by calling or visiting the office (21.1 percent). Automatic recurring deduc- tions from a business customer’s bank account are used by 19.7 percent of these customers. Approximately 16.6 percent pay their monthly rent online by credit card (not automatic re- curring). Kiosk payments were reported by 16 percent of the business customers surveyed.
As evidenced in Chart 5.8, the number of smartphone us-
ers has grown dramatically since 2010—from 62.6 million to 224.3 million. This clearly accounts for the fact that more than 28.2 of business customers use a smartphone to pay their rent: smartphone self-storage facility app (9.7 percent), smartphone credit card app (9.4 percent), and smartphone banking app (9.1 percent).
