or what they are storing, business tenants are desirable customers due to their ex- tended tenancies and prompt payments. The most successful self-storage opera- tors understand their value, catering to them with special services and ameni- ties such as conference rooms, free Wi-Fi, package acceptance, and 24-hour facil- ity access. And, with more than a third paying $300-plus per month for rent, obtaining more commercial custom- ers is a wise idea. Self-storage facilities can attract them through business-to- business marketing, referral programs, and memberships with local chambers of commerce.
Small Business Statistics
Since 2003 the number of non-employer businesses has increased by about 5.2 million. Many of these small businesses tend to use self-storage. Here are some interesting facts:
• As of 2016, there were 28.8 million small businesses, which accounted for 99.7 percent of U.S. businesses. • Approximately 120 million people work for a small business, which is over 50 percent of the working population.
• According to a May 2017 release from the U.S. Census Bureau, the overall number of U.S. non-employer businesses continued its steady growth, increasing by 2.1 percent to 24.3 million from 2014 to 2015.
• Non-employer businesses are businesses that have a business owner but no traditional employees. • Most non-employers (86 percent) are sole proprietors. • In 2015, non-employer businesses generated over $1.1 trillion in gross receipts—and the numbers just keep growing. • The average non-employer business is small and falls into the $10,000 to $24,999 gross receipts bracket. • As of 2014, 52 percent of U.S. businesses were home-based. • Small businesses provide 55 percent of all jobs and 66 percent of all net new jobs since the 1970s.
• America’s 3.7 million micro businesses (those with one to nine employees) made up 75.3 percent of all private-sector employers in 2013, and they provided 10.8 percent of the private-sector jobs.
