Office furniture is stored by business customers 25 percent of the time,
and office supplies are stored 24.7 percent of the time, according to the SSA Demand Study. See Chart 5.9 on the opposite page.
Business customers utilize self-storage units for a va-
riety of reasons, as shown in Chart 5.9. More often than not they are storing business records to conform with le- gal or government requirements (32.6 percent). The next biggest reason is to store inventory (30.2 percent); 28.7 percent store office supplies, furniture, or equipment that they do not have room for at their office. Storing business records for reasons other than to meet legal requirements accounts for the reason to store 24.5 percent of the time.
Storing items temporarily is another reason for using
self-storage (16.4 percent), followed by storing items that the business no longer needs or wants until they find a buyer or another way to dispose of them (14.5 percent).
Some business customers (10.3 percent) use a storage
unit as a distribution center for their products. Conve- nience store snack distributors or bread companies are among those who will utilize storage in this way, having big rigs deliver the supplies to the facility so that the indi- vidual drivers can pick them up there.
Other reasons for business customers storing includes
temporary storage while moving their business location (10.9 percent); temporary storage due to a natural disas- ter such as the recent hurricanes in Texas, a flood, or other natural disaster (8.2 percent); or storage for extra office space during busy times (8.7 percent).
