Section 6 • Site Information When looking at this in terms of generations, more than 82 per-

cent of the Greatest Generation renters chose a unit that was closer to home, as seen in Table 6.4 on the previous page. This most likely reflects the fact that many renters in this age group have retired. This is also reflected in the fact that only 4.7 percent in this age group reported that they rented closer to work.

Frequency Of Visits In general, the majority of renters (25.7 percent) reported that they visited their unit about once a month, as seen in Chart 6.8. While 20.4 percent vis- ited their units three to six times per year, 13 percent reported that they made less than three visits per year.

Visiting two to four times a week was reported by

15 percent of the surveyed business customers.

Approximately 16 percent of renters stated that they visit

their units about every two weeks, while 14 percent visited once a week. Surprisingly, 11 percent of the renters surveyed visited their units more than once a week.

On the other hand, nearly 20 percent of millennials vis-

ited their units more than once a week, and 21.7 percent said they visited once a month. Monthly visits were highest among the Greatest Generation at 35.1 percent.

Chart 6.9 on the opposite page indicates the fre-

quency of visits for business customers. Surprisingly, 27.1 percent of these customers said that they visited their unit fewer than three times per year. Alternatively, 19.5 percent indicated that they visited their unit about once a week; 18.3 percent visited once a month. Nearly 17 percent said they visited their unit about once every two weeks.

Visiting two to four times a week was reported by

15 percent of the surveyed business customers. On the high end of frequency, 12.1 percent visited five or more times per week. This group is most likely comprised of those who use their units for product distribution or store equipment for a small business such as landscap- ing where it is accessed almost daily.

72 Self-Storage Almanac 2018

Baby boomers are the second highest genera-

tional category for tenants renting near home (75.6 percent). Only nine percent stated that they rented closer to work, and 15.3 percent noted that it’s the same distance between home and the workplace.

Millennials were inclined to store near home less than the other generational groups (57.3 percent). This generation seemed to have a higher propensity to rent either closer to work (22.7 percent) or in be- tween home and the workplace (20 percent).
