customers were the 5-by-10 and 10-by-15 units, both of which were rented only 10 percent of the time.
How Far Will They Travel? As seen in Chart 6.5, 34 percent of all customers sur- veyed indicated that they drove for 10 to 19 minutes to get to their storage unit, while 36 percent actually drove less than 10 minutes. And while 14 percent drove 20 to 29 minutes to get to their unit, nine percent reported driving 30 to 44 minutes and only seven per- cent drove 45 minutes or longer.
While 18 percent said they rented an equal distance
from home and work, only 15 percent indicated that they rented closer to work.
When looking at drive times by generation in
Table 6.3, most numbers across all generations were somewhat similar to the customer averages seen in Chart 6.5, minus a few exceptions. The most notice- able difference was that 56.3 percent of the Greatest Generation renters drove 10 to 19 minutes to get to their units compared to the average of 34.1 percent. In addition, 29.5 percent of Gen-X renters indicated the same travel time.

Nearly 21 percent of millennials reported that they drove
between 20 and 29 minutes, compared to the average of 13.9 percent. In addition, 27.8 percent reported that they drove 10 to 19 minutes to get to their units.
Business customers paint a different picture in regards to
drive times, as seen in Chart 6.6. The majority of these cus- tomers (39 percent) drove 20 minutes or more to get to their storage unit(s). Only 30 percent of all business customers surveyed drove less than 10 minutes to access their unit, and 31 percent drove 10 to 19 minutes.
Now that we know about drive times to units, the ques-
tion is this: Do customers rent units closer to their home or closer to their place of employment? The answer can be seen in Chart 6.7 on the next page. While business customers more often than not chose a facility closer to their workplace, approximately 66 percent of non- business customers said that they rented closer to home. While 18 percent said they rented an equal distance from home and work, only 15 percent indi- cated that they rented closer to work.
