ALPHA TAXI, LIVERPOOL INSTALL SCREENS TO PROTECT PASSENGERS AND DRIVERS

Liverpool firm Alpha Taxi has fitted pro- tective screens to some of its vehicles. Customers can re- quest these secure vehicles prior to their journey. As a further gesture of goodwill, Alpha Taxi’s pricing has been lowered to off- peak rates. A spokesperson for Alpha Taxi said: “We have issued a series of measures for our drivers including health and safety advice via our social media pages and newsletters. “We are also reduc- ing our driver rents to less than half price as long as they follow the sanitising guidelines. “This will have a considerable eco- nomic toll on us but as a company in the

have actually an- nounced a freeze on taking on any addi- tional drivers for the foreseeable future so as not to increase competition. “We also add that we hope other par- ties relevant to the industry will follow our lead such as insurance and fuel companies.”

from fresh produce to books or clothing, or children’s toys. The taxis will also be able to pick food up from independent restaurants that don’t use Deliveroo or other delivery services. Cally Thomas, dir- ector at KingKabs and Abbey Taxis, said: “We’ve been struck by how iso- lated people are becoming and by the huge delays for online shopping. We wanted to be able to offer a more local delivery ser-

vice for people who really need it. This will be same-day delivery, so no need to wait a week or two. “We will have to charge for the ser- vice but we don’t want that to restrict access to those most in need, so any elderly or vulnerable customers who would like to use the service and can’t afford it, do get in touch with us direct- ly and we’ll be able to offer complimen- tary runs on a case-by-case basis.”

Blueline Taxis, based in Wallsend, is offer- ing to make food deliveries to reduce visits to supermar- kets and help those who can’t get out. Partnering with a food supplier they are offering deliver- ies of four different food boxes within the fleet area. NHS workers have also been offered vouchers for taxi rides, with a total of £25,000 worth of journeys on offer. NHS key workers can message the

GLASGOW TAXIS DRIVER IS OFFERING FREE LIFTS TO ALL NHS WORKERS

A kind-hearted Glas- gow taxi driver has provided a personal offer of support to the city’s healthcare staff by offering free lifts to all NHS work- ers. Robert Malcolm has placed signs in his vehicle which read: “NHS workers ride for free – just show me your ID”. The gesture has been warmly re- ceived by both the healthcare and wid- er Glasgow com- munities, while Glas- gow Taxis Ltd has used social media channels to encour- age Glaswegians to give Robert a wave when they see him in his cab. Robert said: “It’s a time for us all to pull together and this is something I am able to do. If this one

small gesture helps these dedicated people, it’s worth it.” Glasgow Taxis are increasingly finding themselves doing a variety of jobs such as delivering mes- sages to the elderly and medicine to the sick.

Dougie McPherson, Glasgow Taxis chair- man, said: “Robert’s offer is both gener- ous and moving – he is a credit to himself

and the epitome of the spirit of Glasgow and the city’s

drivers.” “All our drivers are contributing greatly in different ways to keep the city mov- ing and supplies reaching their desti- nation, as well as doing all we can to ensure the isolated and vulnerable are supported. We’re immensely proud of them all.”
