HOW MANY TIMES CAN WE SAY ‘THANK YOU’…

… and how many words can we write about the current state of the UK taxi and private hire industry – and indeed the entire world – as a result of this incredible spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

You’ve all had an overdose of information weekly, daily, hourly, even changing by the minute, via the national media and so- cial media since this dreadful illness took hold of the country, and the entire world, a few short weeks ago. In this edition we try to encapsulate the most up to date, relevant informa- tion; and to provide PHTM readers with article after article of encouraging, embracing, positive behaviours being displayed throughout the trade. It is nothing short of amazing.

We know full well that these next few weeks (months?) are going to be the roughest that most of us have ever experi- enced. The most we can try to do in this total wave of uncer- tainty is to provide as much information (as opposed to misinformation/fake news) as possible – as we always do.

Most of this edition has been devoted to spreading the word, offering encouragement, giving countless examples of selfless acts by operators and drivers alike to help.

If ever there was a time for PHTM to shout from the rooftops, “We’re proud of our trade!” – it is now. We’d like to thank each and every one of those transport providers out there who have turned over their fleets, and drivers who are devot- ing hours and hours of their time, to assist those who need help the most: NHS workers, self-isolating people of all ages but particularly the elderly, and anybody who requires either necessary transport, or food deliveries. No doubt this will con- tinue and multiply over the next few weeks.

We’d like to thank the many suppliers who have provided ar- ticles for this month’s edition, which have set out so much useful information and clarity. That clarity above all else is in- valuable, judging by the volume of calls and emails we’ve fielded asking, “What do I do now?” This edition sets out to answer that question, big style.

The ‘strength in numbers’ concept comes into its own more than ever in times like these: check out the editorial contri- butions from Unite, the GMB, and of course the NPHTA, within these pages. Despite being in the throes of a dire financial sit- uation, you really must consider joining a group: your local as- sociation, a union, a national association. They are all here to help.

A word about the PHTM Expo: As you would expect under Government decree, this year’s Expo at Milton Keynes in June has had to be postponed under the “no gatherings” proviso, as well as common sense and consideration of the health and safety of visitors and exhibitors alike. A new date for the Expo will be announced immediately it is decided.

Bear in mind that any future developments can be found daily on the PHTM website www.phtm.co.uk and Facebook page; that’s the most immediate way you can keep up to date with trade developments.

Above all, please stay safe and healthy. APRIL 2020
