Longstanding taxi supplier The Taxi Shop has weathered the economic storms of the last couple of years. We asked Managing Director Rob Breuilly for his overview of the current market.
How is 2020 treating The Taxi Shop? It’s been good so far. I think last year was tough for
everyone in the trade, including us, but this year we are flying. There are a number of reasons for this, some are external factors beyond our control, but many are business improvements we have made, things that we are able to control.
How does the future look? We are very upbeat at the moment. It feels like the trade is finally livening up a bit after a couple of years in the doldrums. There are some really good, affordable vehicles to be had, and our finance partners are doing amazing things helping hard-to-reach drivers. I have finally got my dream team here at The Taxi Shop; people who are passionate about the business, who are skilled and ambitious. We’ve got new systems in place to deliver consistently. For example, I am very proud of our ISO 9001 quality standard certification. The future looks good.
Which vehicles are selling well this year? We made a fantastic arrangement with Renault for the TRAFIC Sport LL30 L2 minibus. We’ve got both the 120 2L manuals and 170 2L autos, and we were amongst the first to have them, so there was a lot of interest, not least because of its excellent price. I drove one myself for a couple of weeks - I didn’t want to give it back! The TRAFIC has one of the cleanest diesel engines ever built for the trade, very low emissions and of course it is Euro 6.2. That’s why we chose the Renault.
What are your thoughts on how hybrids affect the market? For the first time ever, we are able to offer a very affordable and high performing hybrid minibus: the Ford Custom Mild Hybrid. It’s self- charging, there’s no need to plug in, and it gives drivers just that bit of extra mileage with surprising power even with nine people on board.
When will The Taxi Shop start converting vehicles? We already are! We’ve been doing it for six months now. and have been receiving brilliant feedback from customers too. The vehicle inspector at the test centre told us that ours were amongst the best conversions they had ever seen - not bad! We’re doing hackney and wheelchair accessible conversions every day. I’ve locked the workshop so the boys doing the work can’t escape!

Globally we are facing a time of great uncertainty, the impacts of which are being felt across all industries. In view of these un- precedented circumstances, we wanted to reassure our customers who have taken out finance agreements to purchase vehicles, that our funders are committed to assisting you if your business has been impacted by the Coronavirus. The funders are treating each case individually, but may be able to assist with holiday payments or partial payments to ease the financial strain of a loss of business during this time. Please contact the lender directly if you need any help.
We will keep you all updated with more information as we recieve it. What we can confirm at this time is that most councils are still paying for school runs.
Kindest regards and ensuring you all we are working with you. Rob Breuilly M.D.

We have been working with the taxi trade and PHTM for the past 25 years. I think we can all safely say that we have never
experienced anything like this but during these challenging times please rest assured that we are all in this together. We are fully committed and have constant contact with our finance partners to assure you all that we are doing everything we can to provide our customers, old and new, with the information and support you require during these uncertain times. In line with Government and NHS advice we feel it is our social and moral duty to put our employees’ and customers’ health first. We fully support the Government’s decision to avoid all unnecessary contact and practise social distancing. This is the first time in 25 years that we have had to temporarily suspend our factory, however we believe this is the correct course of action. Our contact numbers and helplines for each finance provider can be found on our website and all our social media platforms. We have a dedicated team of taxi sales specialists and customer services advisers working at home who are available to help you with any enquiries you may have during this time. We look forward to shaking your hand over a new vehicle in the future; until then we hope you and your family stay safe.
